We are looking for two highly motivated junior Content Designers to join our Digital Communications team.

To help tell the story of how Ofgem works to protect energy consumers, you will:

  • take a user first approach to content development
  • develop content to agreed deadlines, using Content Design principles
  • support our regular publishing activities
  • play your part in our website transformation.

What you will be doing

The successful candidates will have a varied workload, including:

  • reviewing, writing, editing and publishing web content
  • supporting our communications campaigns and publishing operations
  • ensuring content development meets editorial standards and aligns with business objectives and user needs
  • working independently, with direction from our Content Designers
  • working in agile team sprints to transform content on ofgem.gov.uk.

What we need from you

As Digital Communications Officer you will be:

  • an excellent copywriter and proof-reader skills, with demonstrable attention to detail
  • an experienced junior Content Designer
  • familiar with content management systems and HTML
  • familiar with accessibility and publishing standards.
  • able to use analytical skills to identify trends and create actionable insight
  • able to thrive in fast-paced environments.

Ideally, you will have experience working in government communications, with an understanding of how communications campaigns can benefit from Content Design.

Job description

As Digital Communications Officer you will make our content easier for people to understand. The successful candidate will work with the Digital Communications team and colleagues across the organisation to develop and iterate website content using Content Design principles, ensuring it is findable, usable and measurable, and effectively engages the audience.

You will:

  • demonstrate experience in writing and editing digital content, using Content Design principles and of publishing using content management systems.
  • understand the importance of content standards and style guidelines and can apply these to your work.
  • understand the importance of using data and evidence to make content decisions.
  • understand the purpose of user stories and the focus on user-centred design.
  • work collaboratively to deliver communications campaigns, ensuring digital channels are used to full potential.
  • provide Content Design support to colleagues across Ofgem, from planning to delivery.
  • support the team with administration and publishing requests.

You will need to approach your work with genuine enthusiasm and an attention to detail that enables colleagues to better understand the diverse needs of our users and improve user experience on our website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, write, edit and publish content to strict deadlines using content management systems.
  • Support the timely delivery of communications campaigns, managing digital content from ideation to launch.
  • Make sure that Ofgem.gov.uk content is user-centred, aligns to business objectives and consistently meets publishing standards.
  • Use analytical skills and work with colleagues to develop and use insight, interpreting research to better understand user needs and improve content based on data and user feedback.
  • Provide content expertise and advice to Ofgem colleagues.
  • Some out of hours working will be required as part of a shared duty rota.

Key Outputs and Deliverables

  • Develop and deliver communications campaigns content.
  • Support the delivery of content transformation on ofgem.gov.uk using Content Design principles.
  • Support digital publishing operational activity, ensuring content meets publishing and accessibility guidelines.
  • Build relationships across Ofgem to focus on the needs of the user and influence stakeholders.
  • Collaborate and problem-solve with colleagues, especially in strategic communications, stakeholder management, events, and policy to deliver tangible improvements to ofgem.gov.uk.
  • Contribute to and use style guides and content patterns.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of writing and editing content, especially for an online audience, using Content Design principles. (Lead criteria)
  • Experience of working in a challenging communications role, with demonstrable previous experience in content management.(Lead criteria)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to work calmly even when faced with fast-paced, high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to interact with stakeholders at a variety of levels and across functions, and to manage client expectations to ensure objectives are met.
  • Experience of using web traffic and behavioural analytics, converting data to insight with the ability to report in various formats.

Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding of social media and other communications channels, integrating content into wider campaigns.
  • Experience of working in government communications, or on GOV.UK, adhering to Government Digital Service (GDS) design principles.
