Job description

Description

This role has a starting salary of £32,512 per annum, based on a 36 hour working week.

We are excited to be hiring a new Education Officer to join our fantastic Education Team. The team works all across Surrey, with this role having a particular focus on the boroughs of either Runnymede, or Mole Valley and Epsom & Ewell, to deliver engaging educational sessions to thousands of children and young people each year. This role forms part of a supportive and innovative team, who are always looking to improve and develop the existing education programme, through continued research and evaluation. The role is flexible in nature, meaning that outside of school visits, there will be the opportunity to work from offices, fire stations, or from home, so no two days are the same.

Rewards and Benefits
  • 26 days' holiday (prorated for part time staff), rising to 28 days after 2 years' service and 30 days after 5 years' service
  • Option to buy up to 10 days of additional annual leave
  • An extensive Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support health and wellbeing
  • Up to 5 days of carer's leave per year
  • Paternity, adoption and dependents leave
  • A generous local government salary related pension
  • Lifestyle discounts including gym, travel, shopping and many more
  • 2 paid volunteering days plus 1 team volunteering day per year
  • Learning and development hub where you can access a wealth of resources
  • Access to regular supervision and continued professional development
  • Agile working

About the Team
At Surrey Fire and Rescue Service we are putting prevention at the heart of our Service and we are looking for two talented and confident people who are ready for the challenge of educating and engaging with our community; helping young people to keep themselves safe and ensuring that the most vulnerable are supported through practical interventions.

You will help to continually shape our education and youth engagement programmes with the support and guidance of the Education Manager and other team managers. We're looking for people who have a strong interest in both sharing safety messages and helping to deliver positive life outcomes for the children and young people that you will be working with.

About the Role
You will be part of a committed team of Education Officers who will, as well as deliver the education programmes, help to deliver targeted youth engagement activities including the Youth Engagement Scheme (YES) and the Firewise Scheme. YES is a practical, drill yard based, 5 day course for 13-16 year olds who have been referred by partner agencies, that uses fire-fighting skills to help them engage with education and the community. Firewise, through targeted educational sessions, helps children and young people to stop setting fires. Candidates will need a flexible approach due to travel around the county with a willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings/weekends.

We will provide you with the specialist training in working with children that set fires (Firewise Scheme) and specific training to become a YES Instructor, working alongside operational firefighters, to ensure you can use both the skills you already have in working with children and young people and develop new ones.

On appointment, you will receive a full induction to the organisation and role and have access to regular supervision and continuous professional development (CPD). You will be provided with Service vehicle, a laptop and mobile phone to allow for flexible and agile working.

This position will require you to work in a variety of locations across Surrey including schools, fire stations and private homes, with school visits being mostly, but not solely, in the one of two defined geographical areas: Runnymede or Mole Valley and Epsom and Ewell. You will therefore need a full and valid driving licence but reasonable adjustments, where needed, will be made for successful applicants who have a disability or long term health condition to enable them to fulfil the requirements of the job.
Shortlisting Criteria
To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
  • Experience of working with children and young people, through teaching, youth work or in another setting.
  • Knowledge of teaching strategies, educational methodology and how children and young people learn.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with, and influence, children, young people and adults in a range of environments.
  • Pro-social behaviours and building appropriate rapport with children, young people and families.
  • Ability to effectively use information technology, including databases and/or spreadsheets and Microsoft Office 365.

We also ask that you include in your personal statement which location you would prefer to work from.
