Job description

The successful candidate will be part of the Electrical Systems team. The team is responsible for the design, installation, commissioning and operation of all DC and pulsed power supplies as well as the installation and commissioning of the power distribution, controls, diagnostics and safety systems for ST40 and future tokamak projects.

The Electrical Engineer will work to support the operation of toroidal and poloidal field coil power supplies on ST40, and associated plant, including gas and vacuum systems, auxiliary heating, and diagnostics. They will also be involved in the specification and design of future power systems and associated electrical infrastructure for ST40 and other tokamak and magnet projects. The Electrical Engineer will also support the business with the application of the electrical safety policy. Within operations, the successful candidate will be trained to fulfil roles including Power Supply Engineer and ST40 Operator.

Responsibilities

  • Specify, design and commission electrical and electronic systems
  • Support the development and application of electrical safety policy and safe working practice
  • Author design documentation, as well as commissioning and operating manuals
  • Author risk assessments and installation method statements for projects
  • Liaise with engineers and scientists responsible for systems including cooling, vacuum, gas, diagnostics and controls on ST40 and other tokamak and magnet programmes
  • Fulfil the operational roles of ST40 Power Supply Engineer and ST40 Operator
  • Internally the post holder will work with the Head of Electrical Systems, and other engineers working within the Company
  • Externally the post holder will be responsible for the management of electrical and electronic engineering manufacturing contracts, and will therefore liaise with manufacturers and component suppliers

Requirements

Essential

  • A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in electrical or electronic engineering
  • Experience in the development and application of electrical safety policy and safe working practice (possibly as an Authorised or Senior Authorised Person)
  • Ability to author, edit and interpret electrical drawings using AutoCAD or equivalent
  • Experience in the design, specification, commissioning and operation of industrial electrical and electronic systems
  • Experience with mains power distribution
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application of BS 7671
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision as well as in a team
  • Good decision-making, problem-solving, planning and organisational skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience in the design, specification, commissioning, and operation of power electronic converters
  • Experience of power electronics simulation in PLECS or equivalent
  • Experience of mechanical design, fabrication and assembly
  • Familiarity with PLCs and fieldbus communication
  • Experience of high-power busbar design
  • Familiarity with Functional Safety Systems
  • Understanding of power distribution, including power network modelling and analysis
  • Experience of thermal and magnetic analysis of room-temperature and superconducting coils

Hazard-specific / Safety-critical duties

  • Working at height (ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers & scaffolding)
  • Occasional night working (11pm-6am)
  • Working with ionising radiation
  • Working with electricity (LV & HV) (training will be given as required)
  • Working with or in the vicinity of equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Working with materials that are managed under the control substances hazardous to health of regulations (COSHH)
  • Travel outside of Europe or North America on company business
