Role: Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Lead

Ricardo have a very successful chemical regulatory and safety business area and we have a unique opportunity for an experienced Environmental/Regulatory Scientist to lead our scientific consultancy offerings and to drive future growth in this area. As lead for the Ricardo Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (ECT) team, you will address key challenges in the hazard and risk assessment of chemicals. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading experts across Ricardo’s multidisciplinary organisation, and externally with academic, industry and regulatory partners. This is a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic and motivated leader to make a real contribution toward the safe and sustainable use of chemicals.
Key responsibilities
- Delivering technical excellence in hazard and risk assessment of chemicals for Ricardo clients.
- Responsible for the overall success and financial performance of the ECT business area.
- Leadership of a team of expert scientists in human and environmental hazard and risk assessment. Driving engagement, growth and development across the team. Team leader responsibility for a number of direct reports.
- Accountable for the delivery of ECT projects, providing support to other project managers and ensuring the availability of adequate resources.
- Enhancing the Ricardo ECT team’s reputation through engagement in scientific research activities.
- Ongoing strategy and business development activities.
Key competencies and experience
- Educated to Master’s degree level or higher in environmental toxicology, chemistry, biology or a related discipline.
- Extensive technical knowledge across: (eco)toxicology, environmental fate, exposure assessment and risk characterisation.
- Hazard and risk assessment of chemicals in an EU regulatory context (e.g. REACH, BPR, WFD etc).
- A track record of scientific excellence, including publishing and presenting research, either independently or in collaboration with other partners or institutions

- Passionate about assessing and managing chemicals, and eager to make an impact in this area.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to lead teams in complex technical disciplines.
- Strong commercial mindset and proven business development and strategic ability, ideally from a consulting background.
- Influencing and the ability to communicate complex information to different audiences.
