Purpose of Job:
As an Environmental Health Officer, you will play a crucial role in managing and organizing the effective provision of specialist Environmental Health technical skills and knowledge. Your primary focus will be to maintain and safeguard standards related to people's health and well-being, contributing to the delivery of the council's objectives and priorities.
Key duties and responsibilities of the current role:
Service Delivery:
- Deliver a specialist service, carrying out a range of skilled activities in Environmental Health to maximize service quality and continuity.
- Maintain, develop, and review systems, processes, and procedures, managing small projects or contracts to secure a cost-effective service and continuous improvement.
People and Partnerships:
- Provide experienced, qualified advice and guidance in Environmental Health to colleagues and managers.
- Liaise and communicate effectively within the council and externally to consult on plans and projects, share knowledge or best practices, and champion the council's approach to improving services.
Resources / Financial Management:
- Assist with the monitoring, analysis, and management of delegated budgets, funding, and resources.
- Support the development of outcome-based commissioning models and/or income generation opportunities to ensure value for money.

Compliance:
- Understand and comply with relevant legal, regulatory, policy, and procedural requirements and standards.

Specific Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and enforce Environmental Health policies, using specialist technical skills and knowledge.
- Conduct routine or unplanned visits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, taking necessary actions to improve conditions.
- Investigate complaints from the general public, providing advice and assistance to householders and businesses.
- Give talks at public inquiries, meetings, and exhibitions, ensuring compliance through education, advice, and enforcement.
- Take enforcement action, initiate legal proceedings, and prepare/give evidence in court.
- Promote and ensure integration of Environmental Health with all other services across the Council and with other partners for a coordinated and seamless operation.
Qualifications and Experience:
- 2 A levels and 5 GCSE (including Maths and English)
- Degree/Diploma in Environmental Health/relevant qualification
- Completion of practical training
- Work experience in Environmental Health or related field of work
- Further qualification in Environmental Health disciplines
