Are you looking for an entry-level Finance role working for one of the largest hospitals in the UK that is both exciting and challenging?

The Finance Team at Cambridge University Hospitals are launching a new Financial Management Apprenticeship role which will enable the successful candidate to study for a professional accountancy qualification – the Assistant Accountant Level 3 Apprenticeship (with AAT – Association of Accounting Technicians – Level 3 included). This role will combine study alongside gaining experience and training in a busy and diverse finance team.

This is a 24 month fixed term developmental role with the opportunity to progress to an Assistant Management Accountant role (Band 4) and up to a Management Accountant (Band 5) role upon achievement of your training goals.

Key elements of the role:

    Once trained, to work with the finance team to complete month end routine requirements

    To develop the skills to be able to investigate significant variances by interrogating all the financial ledger sub-systems and liaising with budget holders

    To meet regularly with budget holders, initially with colleagues, and provide professional support to them

    To work towards assisting with simple ad-hoc costing exercises and investigations as required

    Once trained, to raise invoices and purchase orders and responding to invoice queries, escalating where appropriate

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Come and join us and be supported to earn as you learn whilst undertaking a nationally recognised qualification. You will study an Assistant Accountant Level 3 Apprenticeship (with AAT – Association of Accounting Technicians – Level 3 included). You will need to have minimum GCSE Grade 4/C or Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English plus an AAT or Bookkeeping Level 2 qualification. You will be enthusiastic, have a positive work ethic, be keen to learn and able to work in a team. You will receive support to gain a wide range of experience and skills, supervision and mentoring.

Applicants must also not already have a qualification at a higher level within the same subject matter.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

    Educated to A level standard or equivalent.

    GCSE or equivalent in Higher Level Mathematics and English.

    AAT level 2 or a Level 2 bookkeeping qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria

    MS Office – preparing reports in Word, and using Excel for data – being able to use different formulae.

    Planning and prioritising your time to balance different demands and deadlines.

Desirable criteria

    Some experience of working in an accounting department in a management accountant role within a large organisation would be beneficial.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

    Understand the use and explain the purpose of accounting accruals and provisions

    Self motivated with a proactive approach to problem solving.

    Prepared to contribute to how the department operates.

Skills

Essential criteria

    An ability to listen to budget holders and to respond to questions or requests for information in a way which non-financial staff will understand and can interpret.

    Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both non-finance and finance staff.

    Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels within the organisation.

    Able to carry out work with the required attention to detail in a busy Financial Management department.

    Able to concentrate and focus on a range of issues particularly during the monthly reporting cycle.

    Able to prioritise own workload.
