Imperial is looking for a Fire Safety Advisor to work across our campuses, as we push our teaching, innovation and entrepreneurship to the next level. You will be working with our Fire Safety team to ensure that buildings are safe for students and staff. As the University expands its footprint with future construction projects, you will help with assurance that they are fit for purpose, whilst continuously developing the Fire Safety culture around the existing campuses. Duties and responsibilities
Working closely with the Fire Safety Manager and the rest of the Safety Department, you will be planning, conducting, documenting and reviewing fire risk assessments for university buildings at all campuses.
You will be providing legislative, specialist and technical Fire Safety advice to staff and external stakeholders.
You will plan and carry out Fire Safety audits and inspections of university buildings to ensure that we comply with relevant legislation. You will also facilitate and host enforcing authority visits, supplying documentation where required and addressing any concerns.
Your expertise will be used in investigating fires and fire alarm activations, and in varied tasks such as assisting the compilation of personal emergency egress plans, supervising the scrutiny of applications for hot works permits, and planning the delivery of in-house fire training, amongst others.
Essential requirements
- A recognised professional qualification at Level 3 or equivalent, such as NEBOSH National General Certificate, together with relevant experience in a similar role.
- Demonstrable understanding of Fire Safety legislation, associated technical standards, guidance documents, codes of practice and applied management of Fire Safety.
- Good understanding of passive and active fire protection measures and their associated design, installation and maintenance requirements.
- Customer-focussed, with ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, especially with students, staff, contractors and consultants both internally and externally, orally and in writing.
- Intermediate level IT skills, including Microsoft/Offices 365 Outlook with delegated access to emails and calendars Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint (and cloud-based storage systems).
- Ability to analyse fire risks and determine suitable and often technical or complex mitigating or control measures with limited amount of referral.
- Ability to interpret architectural and engineering plan drawings and provide feedback on proposed designs.
- Ability to take the initiative, work independently with limited supervision, as well as a member of a team and the wider College management team ensuring the successful delivery of service to a deadline.

- Ability to identify skills gaps and training needs relating to fire risk and workplace processes.
- Substantial and recent experience as a full-time Fire Safety specialist, consultant or authority inspecting officer practicing across a wide range of major premises.
- Significant experience of fire risk assessment, utilising PAS 79 health, in a variety of large and complex premises accommodating a range of risk scenarios.
- Practical experience of applying Fire Safety legislation, Fire Safety management, and the principles of fire engineering.
