1 Year Fixed-Term-Contract
For 130 years, we’ve been committed to continuously improving what we do for our guests and the people we work with. Formed in 1893, Hurtigruten Group is the world’s leading adventure travel group. We have 2,400+ employees worldwide, representing more than 50 nationalities. The Group consists of 3 business units: HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions), Hurtigruten Norway, and Hurtigruten Svalbard which offer unique small-ship and land-based adventures from pole-to-pole. Offering big adventures on our six small, custom-built ships, HX explores hundreds of destinations in over 40 countries across 5 continents.
HX is our expedition cruise business, which takes our guests from the wilderness of the Arctic to the Galápagos Islands, in our purpose-built expedition ships. In the last year, HX has been focussed on becoming a fully standalone business from Hurtigruten Group. We’re hard at work, splitting our systems and digital real estate, while also developing our unique brand proposition, to become the global leader in the expedition cruise segment.
Our ideal candidate
We have a small engineering team based in London, which currently owns our B2C application, and consumes a legacy booking system API and content from Contentful via a GraphQL middleware. We’ll likely take over a B2B React app later in the year, and potentially a React Native cruise ship app.
Our perfect candidate will have experience of working on an eCommerce platform at scale, will have juggled multiple stakeholders, have experience of making architectural decisions and led on features from conception and refinement, all the way through to implementation.
They will be level-headed and easy to work with and have examples of them tackling hard problems (reducing risks, communicating with teams internally and cross functionally, and bringing good results), will have an eye towards the trade-offs of pragmatism vs engineering at scale.
Our Stack
We are migrating to Kubernetes (AKS), but for now:
- Tailwind
- Next.js
- React
- Cypress
- Vitest
- Node
- GraphQL
- Optimizely
- Git workflows
- Azure
- Cloudflare
- Docker
- Senior-level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript/ Typescript, with at least 3 years of that experience using React and Next.js
- Backend experience to contribute to our GraphQL middleware and Redis cache
- Be pragmatic. Balance short-term speed of development with the long-term technical quality of our systems
- Bring your voice and ideas to the team, thinking beyond the code and about our customers and processes
- Be proactive and take ownership; sometimes you’ll be battling against legacy processes and systems, but won’t let blockers stay blocked.
What the job involves:
Frontend Development Responsibilities (70%):
- Collaborate with cross-functional team members including Product Manager, UI designers, copywriters, researchers, and other engineers to conceptualize and deliver engaging features for users.
- Develop frontend features using React and Typescript, styled with Tailwind CSS.
- Utilize our A/B experimentation framework, Optimizely, to launch and iterate on features.
- Develop against a headless CMS (we use Contentful), and confident in designing content abstractions that will stand the test of time
- Ensure quality practices by writing end-to-end tests using Cypress, unit tests with Vitest, and configuring monitoring and alerting systems.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of GraphQL endpoints and middleware.
- Improve existing best practices including test culture, code reviews, mentoring, and documentation.
Backend and DevOps Responsibilities (30%):
- Manage GitHub workflows for version control and collaboration.
- Set up and configure monitoring tools within Azure for application performance.
- Debug backend issues such as cache errors and other infrastructure-related tasks.
- Utilize Docker for containerization and deployment processes.
Hybrid working including Home and Head Office.
