Job description

About Us

National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system, spanning the UK and the US. Our businesses supply gas and electricity, safely, reliably, and efficiently to millions of customers and communities. But we also drive change through engineering innovation and by incubating new ideas with the power to revolutionise our industry.

At National Grid, we share the belief that we need to stand for something beyond profit. We have a responsibility to demonstrate our contribution to society more broadly, whether that’s helping the young people of today to become the energy problem-solvers of tomorrow, supporting our customers to use energy more efficiently, or tackling climate change by targeting net zero for our own emissions by 2050.  That’s why our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future.

About The Role

As an experienced specialist within the UK Strategy and Regulation function in our group headquarters function, you will work as part of the UK Policy and Regulation Team to lead National Grid’s thinking on the design of Future Energy policy and the role of markets in the UK, promoting actions that can support delivery of a net zero economy. You will be our in-house expert on non-network energy sector policy and regulation. This includes wholesale market design, ancillary market approaches and retail market regulation.

Your primary responsibility will be to expand National Grid’s energy policy capabilities into all areas of the UK energy market and to develop thought leadership in this area. We have the experience and expertise to provide insights to help policy makers navigate the energy transition and to shape a future net zero energy system – and underlying regulatory frameworks. Expanding our thought leadership into areas such as market design, and horizon scanning to understand the challenges of developing and operating a net zero energy system, is a CEO priority, which you would be responsible for implementing.

Key Accountabilities

As part of this critical role your accountabilities will include:

  • Drawing on your extensive experience and deep understanding of the UK and international energy policy and regulation across wholesale and retail markets, to lead our thinking on the Government’s Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and future market reforms.
  • Understanding the UK-specific macro and micro political, socio and economic factors that will impact market arrangements and how such arrangements interact with the network regulation landscape.
  • Working with our Market Analytics and Corporate Affairs teams to execute a programme of thought leadership: developing informed perspectives on the future of the energy system to maintain our position at the centre of the energy transition.
  • Engaging widely and constructively with key stakeholders including Government, Ofgem, and industry, including representing the views of National Grid in public fora.
  • Working closely with the Corporate Strategy team and the Regulation and Policy teams in our UK business units (Electricity Transmission, Strategic Infrastructure, Electricity Distribution and National Grid Ventures) as you develop National Grid positions on broad questions of energy policy reform to ensure that our commercial interests are appropriately represented. You will also work with the business units to help them to understand and adapt in response to the changing energy market environment.
  • Creating high quality written communications to share insights and shape strategic decision making at senior levels.

About You

We are looking for experienced candidates who possess the following:

  • An energy market expert, with experience of developing and interacting with energy policy, in the design and operation of wholesale Energy Markets, energy systems and balancing and ancillary markets.
  • Commercial experience relating to wholesale Energy Markets and government interventions to support investment in the sector (e.g., Contracts for Difference, capacity market).
  • A strong strategic thinker, with the ability to see the big picture, but also address shorter term more tactical issues. Strategic ability should be balanced by a strong understanding of the operational and commercial challenges faced by a business and the factors which can derail the successful implementation of a strategy.
  • Ability to work with and influence board, executive level, and senior leaders within an organisation, and engage effectively at multiple levels across an organisation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to convey complex strategic ideas and proposals to a wide range of audiences in a structured and logical way, through both written and verbal forms.
  • Ability to challenge entrenched thinking in a constructive manner; a willingness and openness to receiving similar challenge.
