Job description

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester offers an exciting opportunity for a highly driven, innovative and experienced leader to join its Leadership Team as Head of Planning, Compliance and Special Projects. This is a high profile leadership role overseeing a wide and dynamic business portfolio, within a Faculty comparable in scale to a medium-sized UK university. The post offers a demonstrably successful career progression route to director level roles within the Higher Education sector and beyond.

About Us

The University of Manchester is a truly global institution, with a reputation for education and innovation that resonates across the world. Global rankings place Manchester as the 28th best university in the world (QS University World Rankings, 2023) and 6th in the UK (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2023).

The University is divided into three Faculties, each equivalent in size to a medium-sized UK university: the Faculty of Science and Engineering has an annual income of over £250 million, over 2,500 members of staff, and 12,000 students. The size and scale of the University means we can offer unparalleled opportunities for interdisciplinary ventures and collaborative working, enabling our staff and students to achieve great things.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers a wide range of professionally accredited taught and research programmes of study. The breadth and international quality of our science and engineering research expertise enables us to directly address critical challenges facing humankind and advance understanding. Our facilities extend beyond our city centre campus and include Jodrell Bank Observatory, Dalton Nuclear Institute in Cumbria, and Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. In 2021 we completed construction of the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD), the largest home for engineering in any UK university.

About the Role

We are looking for a proactive and innovative individual to join our Faculty Leadership Team as Head of Planning, Compliance and Special Projects. The role covers a wide and dynamic business portfolio and provides high-profile strategic and operational support and leadership across the Faculty, and wider University, to enable its ongoing success and development, achievement of objectives, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, guidance and reporting requirements. The role works as part of the wider virtual University planning team.

The successful candidate will be able to blend authentic, emotionally intelligent leadership within a large and complex organisational context, working in close partnership with academic and professional services colleagues at all levels to deliver successful and impactful change. You will also be adept in understanding how to use different types of information and data, and able to interpret complex information for a variety of stakeholder audiences.

You will provide leadership to a highly motivated and enthusiastic team, demonstrating a firm commitment to individual and team development alongside a provision of a high quality and responsive service and expert advice to the Vice President and Dean, Director of Faculty Operations and wider Faculty Leadership.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
