Head of Safety

Flannery Plant Hire is a leading provider of plant hire and specialist attachments to the construction industry across the UK and Ireland. As part of our continuous innovation and commitment to safety, we are looking for a Head of Safety to join our award-winning team.

As the Head of Health and Safety at Flannery Plant Hire, you will be responsible for overseeing and implementing all health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all employees and contractors. Responsibilities include overall health and safety management across all depots and operational yards nationally. This role will entail regular depot and yard audits, regular traveling between locations, and writing comprehensive risk assessments and method statements to ensure the highest standards of health and safety are maintained. You will play a crucial role in identifying and mitigating potential risks, promoting a culture of Safety, and ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement health and safety strategies, policies, and procedures in line with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of work sites, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Coordinate with department managers to implement corrective actions following audits and inspections, ensuring timely resolution of any identified issues.
  • Deliver health and safety training programs to employees and contractors to raise awareness and promote safe practices.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor and analyse health and safety data to identify trends and areas for improvement, and report findings to senior management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a safety culture and drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
  • Stay up to date on relevant health and safety legislation and industry trends to ensure compliance and best practices are maintained.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, to ensure open lines of communication and a proactive approach to health and safety management.
  • Collaborate with external agencies and contractors to ensure that they adhere to Flannery Plant Hire's health and safety standards while working on company premises.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and documentation related to health and safety, including risk assessments, incident reports, and training records
  • Manage relationships with regulatory authorities, external auditors, and other stakeholders on health and safety matters.
  • Manage a team of health and safety regional leads, providing guidance, support, and coaching to drive performance and achieve departmental goals.
  • Drive initiatives to promote employee well-being, mental health awareness, and overall wellness in the workplace.
  • Drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance by analysing data, identifying trends, and implementing strategies to mitigate risks and enhance safety protocols.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field is desirable but not essential.
  • Previous experience in Plant Hire would be advantageous but not essential
  • Experience managing health and safety in the construction industry is essential
  • Certified Health and Safety professional (e.g., NEBOSH or IOSH) preferred.
  • Proven experience in health and safety management, particularly within the construction or plant hire industry.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to identify risks, assess data, and develop effective solutions.
  • Proactive attitude to work and isn’t afraid to be hands on
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel nationally to visit depots and yards as required.
