The purpose of the role:
The Health and Safety Advisor will assist the Head of Health and Safety in ensuring all obligations towards health and safety are met. They will support with the implementation of new and existing legislation and internal procedures and will also help to support managers to achieve safe working conditions, legal compliance and the development of an effective health and safety culture.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Working with the Head of Health and Safety to develop, implement and maintain health and safety policies and procedures and to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation and guidance. Assist with the review and update of the Legal Register to reflect legislation changes.
- Supporting with the development and implementation of management systems that meet the requirements of ISO 45001. Undertaking formal internal audits of our system and its implementation across all business activities.
- Assisting in the preparation of internal reports meeting packs and agenda items and supporting with the ongoing management of the Health and Safety Committees.
- Setting safety standards and assist with the development and implementation of safe systems of work. Ensure employees and managers fully understand and adhere to those expectations. Delivering toolbox talks, employee inductions and creating content for safety communications.
- Working with managers and supervisors to develop their skills to undertake risk assessments, accident investigations and inspections to enable a proactive approach to health and safety risk management.
- Monitoring the H&S performance by undertaking inspections of work activities at work locations, as well as scheduling and tracking of all internal inspections across all departments, reviewing and tracking the reports completions. Communicate findings with appropriate recommendations for improvements and ensure corrective actions are closed within set timescales.
- Undertaking incident investigations. Identify possible causes, monitoring and driving implementation of lessons learned, corrective actions and preventative measures.
- Supporting managers during the procurement of suppliers and contractors by evaluating suitability with respect to their H&S competency. Continuously monitoring the H&S performance of suppliers and contractors, attending regular liaison meetings, taking minutes, and follow up the actions agreed in the meeting.
- Identifying H&S training requirements and planning safety training programmes in conjunction with the People Team and Operational leaders. Leading on the selection of external training providers and liaising with providers to organise courses.
- Liaising with the People Team regarding health and wellbeing issues, including occupational health provision, mental health support, returns to work, particularly where risk assessments are required.
- Providing advice and support on all aspects of health and safety to managers and employees.
- Assisting with the delivery of a H&S behavioural program for all employees and relevant suppliers. Leading by example in the development of the safety culture.
- Ensuring that core practices are operated to protect the safety of all and the reputation of the organisation. Liaising with external parties in relation to H&S, such as contractors, shareholders and community groups where appropriate.
- Continuously and proactively carry out reviews to improve systems, policies, technology and ways of working to optimise safety across the Group and ensure the Safety Team is a valued partner to the organisation.
- To demonstrate the core values of working as one team, taking personal ownership, thinking commercially and being customer focused.
- In-depth knowledge of OSH legislation, ACoPs and Guidance and practices
- Proven experience as safety Advisor or similar
- Experience in developing policies and procedures.
- Experience in development, implementation and delivering of H&S induction /training, coaching and mentoring on relevant OSH systems and training programs.
- Excellent communication and advisory skills.
- Proficient in MS Office
Required qualifications and experience:
- NEBOSH National General Certificate (or working towards)
- IOSH Managing Safely
- Member of IOSH or working towards
- Working towards a NVQ Level 6 in occupational safety
