About the Role

Base Location: Sunderland

Salary: Circa £21,000 with a post qualification salary of circa £37,000 + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

This is a unique opportunity to join our ICP Commercial team within the SSE distributed energy business unit. You'll be assigned a mentor/buddy to help navigate working within an office and site environment, whilst developing social skills, confidence and stakeholder relationships.

On completion of the apprenticeship, you'll have a level 4 qualification in Construction and Built Environment (Quantity Surveying), fully funded by SSE and invaluable hands-on experience. Once obtained, this qualification will provide opportunity to pursue further studies in construction.

The qualification is delivered by blended learning over 3 years with at least 1 day per week at Gateshead College, and the remaining days in the office or at site to support practical learning.Additional course programme information can be found below.

Construction Quantity Surveying technician / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

During the programme, you'll learn:-

  • Principles and responsibilities imposed by law and other regulations in a construction environment.
  • Sustainability issues in projects across economic, social and environmental aspects.
  • Different forms of contracts used in construction and why they are applied in different situations.
  • Different construction techniques and materials and the principles of design.
  • The importance of controlling costs during a construction project and the effect of changes to the project.
  • How to support with the selection of and negotiation with specialist contractors for a construction project.
  • How to support with the measurement and costing of construction works during a project.
  • How to support with the preparation of financial reports, cash flow and cost forecasts for a construction project.
  • How to support with the collection, collation and storage of relevant data and its analysis.
  • How to work with others in a collaborative and non-confrontational way.
  • How to work within Rules and Regulations of Professional Competence and Conduct for the industry’s recognised professional bodies.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we'd love you to have:

  • Five GCSEs or equivalent including level 4 English and Maths; or Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths; or a Level 2 Apprenticeship.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Be keen to learn, proactive and asks questions and have an interest and basic understanding in electrical infrastructure, numbers and projects.
  • You’ll need to be able to commute to Gateshead College one day per week and different sites in Sunderland and Teesside.
