Duties & Responsibilities of Higher Level Teaching Assistant

We expect our Higher Level Teaching Assistants at Hill Avenue Academy to make the education of their pupils their first concern, and are accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct. Core Purpose
The core purpose of the Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Hill Avenue Academy is to complement the professional work of teachers by taking responsibility for agreed learning opportunities under an agreed system of supervision. This may involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals/groups or short term for whole classes and monitoring pupils and assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ achievement, progress and development. The role will include learning as well as supporting learning.

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant will also work alongside the teacher in the classroom, in support of pupil’s learning, including those with Special Educational needs under the direction and guidance of the class teacher. It is to make a contribution to the planning of the learning, to help pupils to access the tasks expected of them, to support as appropriate and to help monitor their progress. It is important that teacher and Teaching Assistant work closely together in order to make the best use of the time available in the classroom. These principles apply whether or not the pupils have Special
Educational Needs.

  • To prepare materials and resources to support individuals, small groups and classroom learning opportunities

  • To support children’s behaviour in line with the school’s vision, values and positive behaviour policy
  • To have an awareness of and adherence to all school safeguarding procedures and participate in training as appropriate
  • To ensure the health and safety of the children and to report any concerns or details of accidents/incidents as necessary to the Headteacher
  • To implement and promote the schools equal opportunities policies at all times and to value diversity
  • To support the school’s wide range of extra - curricular activities; including helping to run a club

Key responsibilities as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Leading Learning
1. To lead learning as directed by a teacher to provide PPA cover/Leadership time cover/group work within a class
2. To ensure all children access learning
3. To deliver learning according to planning, assess learning and mark outcomes of learning.
4. To use a variety of teaching and learning styles to engage all learners
5. To ensure behaviour management is carried out consistently and fairly in line with school policy
6. To ensure all learning is delivered in line with school policy
7. To ensure all pupils work is marked in line with school policy
8. To contribute to the upkeep of pupil profiles in EYFS
9. To lead a key aspect across the phase you work in: planning for this aspect, delivering it and assessing the impact of your work.

Supporting the Pupil
1. To assess the needs of pupils and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupils’ learning
2. To establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
3. To support children in their learning under the direction of a class teacher to enable pupils to achieve their full potential and targets set for them.
4. To develop knowledge of a range of learning support needs and to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the children to be supported. Taking into account the learning support involved, to aid children to learn as effectively as possible both in-group situations and individually by: a. Clarifying and explaining instructions b. Ensuring the child is able to use equipment and materials provided c. Motivating and encouraging the child as required d. Assisting in weaker areas, e.g. language, behaviour, reading, spelling, handwriting/ presentation e. Helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set f. Supporting groups/ individuals on achieving key learning objective to promote achievement. (Whether it be more/ least able pupils) g. Meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence h. Liaising with class teacher and SENDCO about individual education plans

(IEPs)

i. Developing appropriate resources to support children

7. To develop methods of promoting/ reinforcing pupils self esteem

Supporting the Teacher
1. To organise and manage appropriate learning environment and resources
2. To work within an agreed system of supervision, plan challenging teaching and learning objectives
3. To evaluate and adjust lessons/work plans as appropriate
4. To monitor and evaluate pupil responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against pre-determined learning objectives
5. To provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required on pupil achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence.

6. To record progress and achievement in lessons/activities systematically and provide

7. To evidence of range and level of progress and attainment
8. To work within an established discipline policy to anticipate and manage behaviour constructively, promoting self-control and independence.
9. To supporting the role of parents in pupils’ learning and contribute to/lead meetings with parents to provide constructive feedback on pupil progress/achievement etc.

10. To administer and assess/mark tests and invigilate exams/tests.
11. To produce lesson plans, worksheets, plans etc.

Support For The Curriculum
1. Deliver learning opportunities to pupils within agreed system of supervision, adjusting opportunities according to pupil responses/needs.
2. Deliver local and national learning strategies i.e. English, Maths , early years and make effective use of opportunities provided by other learning opportunities to support the development of pupils’ skills

3. Use ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.

4. Select and prepare resources necessary to lead learning activities, taking account of pupils’ interests and language and cultural backgrounds

5. Advise on appropriate deployment and use of specialist aid/resources/equipment.

Support For The School
1. Comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality of data protection, reporting concerns to an appropriate person.

2. Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop

3. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school

4. Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support achievement and progress of pupils

5. Take the initiative as appropriate to develop appropriate multi-agency approaches to supporting pupils

6. Recognise own strengths and areas of specialist expertise and use these to lead, advise and support others

7. Deliver out-of-school learning activities within guidelines established by the school
8. Contribute to the identification and execution of appropriate out-of-school learning activities which consolidate and extend work carried out in class
9. To be aware of confidential issues linked to home/teacher/school work and to keep confidence appropriately
10. Any other tasks as directed by the Headteacher, which fall within the purview of the post.

Administrative duties
1. Prepare and present displays of students' work
2. Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching
3. Undertake other duties from time to time as the Headteacher requires
