Job description

Lincolnshire County Council is offering an exciting opportunity for two people to join our Highways Team as part of the Highways Development Programme. The role offers on-the-job training whilst working towards gaining a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship qualification.

About the role

Working alongside a mentor, you will gain first hand practical experience and an appreciation and understanding of working within the full Highways service.  The position offers a chance to gain skills and knowledge within different teams, including Highways Maintenance & Design, specialist asset knowledge such as Bridge Design, Parking Services, Street Works and Permitting, Contract drafting and Project Management.  You will be required to attend Lincoln College The Lincoln College Group, Lincoln College once a week (or another educational establishment for stage 3), to gain the Civil Engineering qualifications required. You will be committed to your own personal development, through training and mentoring by colleagues, to complete the apprenticeship programme.

The primary work-base for the role will be in Lincoln, however, the Highways service covers the whole of Lincolnshire and consideration will be given to the candidates working in other locations around the County. This role will be a mix of hybrid and onsite working, with an expectation of attendance in an office on agreed days.

About you

We are looking for a dedicated, self-motivated, and enthusiastic individual, who has a hunger for knowledge and an eagerness to learn.  Working as part of a team, you will need to work well with others and be able to manage your time effectively when working independently. You will need to be confident when liaising with internal and external stakeholders and be able to cope well under pressure.

Candidates should possess a manual driving licence or work towards this as soon as possible after starting the role and have access to a vehicle for works purposes.

About the team

You'll become part of a larger Highways Team, offering a rich pool of experience and expertise. In addition, you'll have another apprentice alongside you. We'll establish a buddy system pairing you with a team member to support you, alongside your manager, ensuring you have everything you need not only to learn and excel but to truly enjoy your role and grow with Lincolnshire County Council.

About the Apprenticeship

The Development Programme will develop candidates’ skills and attributes, prior to onward progression within the service and it is hoped that the successful candidates will develop into future leaders within Lincolnshire County Council.

The Highways Development programme allows candidates to progress through career development at stages 1, 2 and 3 depending on successfully demonstrating knowledge, skills, and qualifications at regular gateway reviews. Candidates may join the Development Programme at stages 1, 2 or 3 depending on their educational background.

The qualification will start at Stage 1 – which will lead to Level 3/ Level 4 qualifications, with progression to Stage 2 - Level 4 – 6 qualifications and on to Stage 3 - Levels 5-7 (degree level) qualifications or, for the right candidate, will start the programme at Level 7.
