This role is in the Home Care Central Supply Chain team reporting to the Home Care Chief Product Supply Officer.

Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence Lead provides manufacturing technology and design leadership to ensure delivery of the Category business plan in the short, medium and long term. This is achieved through development of a clear Technology Strategy, fit-for-purpose and market technical roadmaps and delivery of the category capital plan via strong partnerships with Cluster Engineering teams. The position also leads the Manufacturing Excellence Program and The Make Digitalization Program to all HC sites. It is directly responsible for the phases of category technology discovery and development and will assume leadership of one or more cross-category technology platforms with membership from BG, BUs and site engineering teams.

Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence Lead will provide technology support in delivery of the Category innovation and savings program, and assume design leadership to FEED completion/ contract gate in the Engineering process via its own team and/ or the design centre in Mumbai. Capital efficiency and a keen affordability focus will remain as major considerations in driving innovation and manufacturing technology development.

This role will be responsible for engaging with stakeholders within and outside SC for defining both short and long term plans – BG, BUs, Procurement, Capabilities and R&D to land the above. This Director will be responsible to build category technology capability across Unilever.

The role will be responsible for leading a high hazard technology platform, defining the programme to manage the risks of this hazard on a global level, in partnership with the Safety team, by defining and upgrading standards, developing and engaging technical authorities in the clusters and implementing a robust programme.

The role will manage a total of 10 people within category engineering teams across 5 locations and will support the BG to direct and control the Category engineering framework and capital budget. The role will also lead a cross functional organisation engineers to deliver any of the key platform technology agendas.

This is a broad technical role with a large responsibility where the right candidate will get full exposure to business level decision making forums.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the very highest engineering standards and processes are implemented and are aligned to global specifications, considering cluster specific requirements and needs.

  • Ensure assets are designed to comply with Unilever’s safety, quality and sustainability standards and practices such as HACCP and QMS, and LEED certification.

  • Translate strategy into implementation programmes to deliver market competitiveness, innovations and savings through Manufacturing Technology.

  • Lead and manage outputs from cross-category technology platforms & discovery programs including the development and roll out of technology solutions aligned with category and cluster needs with membership from group, cluster and site engineering teams.

  • Drive project design to FEED conclusion supporting short, medium and long term investment for growth, innovation and convergence

  • Catalyst for MAKE best practice definition and replication through Global and Regional Virtual Sites

  • Drive innovation excellence and project execution excellence by championing Early Product Management /Early Equipment Management/DFM

  • Ensure effective link with R&D and factories for innovation and VIP

  • Maintain strong links to the engineering world internally and externally ensuring best practice engineering technology and knowledge is available to Unilever and is shared within the Global COP

  • Ensure innovation and savings OTIF

  • Ensure technology harmonisation, convergence, simplification and flexible manufacturing

  • Delivery of key metrics on Capital efficiency

  • Single point contact for one or more small “c” categories and support point for category Supply Chain VP

  • Lead the Technical Platform for a high hazard element in Manufacturing and the extended Supply Chain through

ALL ABOUT YOU

  • Engineering degree or equivalent (Mechanical, Electrical, A&C or Chemical)
  • Project management skills (Post Graduate and industry certified courses beneficial)

  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and networking skills (inter personal and planning)

  • Analytical, financial and business management skills. (Post Graduate and industry certified courses beneficial)

  • Design for Manufacturing (DfM), Design of Experiments (DoE) and WCM concepts – FI/PM/EEM/EPM

  • Knowledge of the extended SC and how it works

  • Business finance and economics – with a deep appreciation of the impact of capital equipment ownership on the business.

Experience Required:

Essential:

  • Deep engineering and technology understanding and credibility coming from significant Technology experience in Make in either packing or processing

  • Experience of working in a production environment in a key site role

  • Track record of project and technology delivery of at least 20Mn€ in capital value.

  • Previous Regional or Cluster level responsibility is a clear benefit

  • Strong networking skills

  • Ability to work effectively with a number of cultures and without supervision

  • Ability to lead and work in virtual teams

  • Ability to build critical skills and develop key talent

Areas of relevant experience

  • Significant experience in Engineering and Technology in R&D and Supply Chain with a thorough knowledge of manufacturing technologies and Quality processes.

  • Proven ability to have successfully identified, sold into the business, developed and implemented new manufacturing technology projects valued over 10 million Euros.

  • Proven ability to have project managed projects over €20m

  • Proven ability to work in and lead multi-functional/ multi-cultural teams across geographies.

  • Proven ability to have been the lead SC technology manager in large 3D global innovations

  • Knowledge and experience in Quality in Innovation for Manufacturing. This will include statistical analysis and process control, supplier assessment and capabilities, risk assessments for machinery, functional performance including the interaction of raw materials / packing materials / formulations

  • Proven track record of preparing machine/ process stream specifications and machinery project management networks, risk profiles and execution plans.

  • Good understanding of the materials conversion processes

  • Literacy in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project software

  • Additionally the candidate should "meet expectations" on the Standards of Leadership behaviours relevant to the WL of this job.

Travel:

Travel requirements of this key role means that travel averaging up to 40% of the time can be fully expected.
