Address Role The Junior Trust Grade Doctor forms an integral part of care delivery within the Neurosurgery Division at The Walton Centre. Clinical care is delivered by three Neurosurgical Teams comprising of six to seven Consultants with a mix of both spinal and cranial work. Each team has junior doctors; Registrars and Clinical Fellows, supported by Advanced Nurse Practitioner teams; Pharmacists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists. The role is complementary to the role of junior doctors in training, although it is not a training post.
The post-holder will be able to access the same educational opportunities within the Trust as trainees, and will be allowed study leave and a small study leave budget to facilitate access to wider educational opportunities. An Educational Supervisor will be allocated to each post-holder. The Trust is keen to support those post-holders interested in gaining national selection. Post-holders will work primarily on the wards, and will have a full commitment to the full shift rota to cover the whole Trust.
Junior doctors are also allocated to theatre, with no ward or on-call commitments on their theatre days. The rota is a 1:15 week of nights, 1:7.5 long days and has a commitment to weekends. The successful candidate will be expected to have a good general medical background. The morning starts with a Consultant handover meeting attended by all teams, following which each team subdivides and undertakes a ward round.
Clinical work emanates from this round. Emergency patients are dealt with by SMART (Surgical & Medical Acute Response Team) which has a junior doctor as part of the Team. Close liaison with SMART is essential to ensure effective patient handover takes place. The role is ideal for those doctors who are considering a career in Neurology/ Neurosurgery or related disciplines as it will allow development of specific skills in a busy and expanding specialist centre.
Clinical Duties The post-holder will be attached to one of three Neurosurgical teams and allocated to one sub-team. They will be responsible to the Consultant Neurosurgeons and Registrars in that team to provide the daily clinical care of the Neurosurgical patients to which he/she is assigned Terms and conditions of service: The appointment is subject to the terms and conditions of employment of the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder is required to take responsible care for the health and safety of him/herself and other persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions at work. The post holder is also required to co-operate with the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust to ensure that statutory and departmental safety regulations are adhered to.
The post holder is responsible for managing risks in their own areas of control in accordance with Trust Risk Management and Governance polices and arrangements. This position will be subject to Occupational Health clearance and DBS.
