The Role

Are you a passionate and dedicated educator with a thirst for knowledge discovery and a desire to inspire the next generation? If yes, we invite you to join our school.
Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Statistics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics.

Our Statistics Group is internationally recognised for its strength in applied probability, applied statistics, computational statistics, and sports statistics.  The Statistics Group has been supported in recent years by BBSRC, CRUK, EPSRC, ESRC, EU, Leverhulme, MRC, NIHR and Wellcome.

We have many opportunities for statisticians to engage with researchers across a wide range of disciplines, including the other groups within the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics, the School of Computing, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences. We are also partners with the Newcastle-based National Innovation Centre for Data.  We are heavily involved in the University development of Newcastle Helix, a £200 million project bringing together academia, the public sector, business, and industry on a new site in the heart of the city.

You will be expected to research and publish high-quality papers, contribute to other collaborative research programmes, and support with administrative activities. You will also foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages our students to participate and think critically. You will be a mentor and support students with their academic and professional growth.

Our aim is to employ a rich mix of people with different backgrounds that will help us to:
•    Bring new ideas and different perspectives to both teaching and research
•    Refresh our engagement with one another and challenge our thinking
•    Enhance our collegiate environment
•    Provide more diverse role models, attract a wider range of bright, active, and engaged students, and enhance our pastoral care

We are keen to attract applicants who will actively contribute to all aspects of the school, and who will be enthusiastic and committed to new ventures and innovations in teaching and research. All applicants who fulfil the criteria are welcome. We are keen to offer opportunities, where possible, to people from groups who are currently underrepresented in mathematical sciences in the UK.

We are the proud recipients of an institutional silver Athena SWAN award and a unit-level bronze award, demonstrating our achievements and ongoing commitment to achieving gender equality.

To apply, please complete an online application and provide the following documents:
•    A cover letter of no more than two sides of A4. Your cover letter should detail how you can evidence the criteria in ‘The Person’ section of the job description (insert link). Please outline clearly why you think your background and research complements the existing Statistics Group, how you would fit into the wider university community, and how a position at Newcastle will foster your future academic career.
•    Please also include within your cover letter a short statement regarding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, which should include both your past contributions and your desired future contributions at Newcastle.
•    A full CV, including details of your qualifications and publications, any relevant research funding, post-graduate supervision, technical or teaching experiences, and citizenship.
