The Role

 

Do you have the passion and drive we need to educate and train future generations of talented engineers? The School of Engineering is recruiting a Senior Lecturer (Teaching & Scholarship) in Electrification. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading Engineering Schools in the UK.

The successful candidate will take the lead for the development and/or contribute to the delivery of programmes, modules, and a range of high-quality teaching and learning resources for the Newcastle University Institute of Electrification and Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (IESAM).

 

You will work as part of a team to ensure the development and success of IESAM. The Senior Lecturer will also be expected to provide learning support and pastoral care to students, and to use your subject expertise to contribute more widely to the School’s teaching activities.


The successful candidate will join a renowned team of experts in the School of Engineering who lead and hold key roles in providing teaching and skills training on Electrification, Power Electronics, Machines, Drives and Advanced Manufacturing.

Key Accountabilities

⦁    Contribute to the planning and development of new programmes and modules, with a strong focus on the electrification skills agenda. An appointment at Senior Lecturer level will see you take more of a leading role in this area

⦁    At Senior Lecturer level you will also oversee the management of: 

⦁    The design and delivery of high-quality teaching and learning materials, resources and activities at FE and HE levels (FHEQ Levels 3 to 7). Where appropriate, this should be carried out within external professional or accreditation requirements

⦁    The delivery of a range of FE lecturer skills training sessions and workshops (“Train the Trainer” events)
⦁    the integration, management, and supervision of student learning experiences such as projects, practicals, and where appropriate field trips and placements
⦁    The integration of scholarship and/or professional activities within teaching and supporting learning, as appropriate
⦁    The provision of personal tutoring and mentoring for students, giving first line support. Refer students as appropriate to services providing further help
⦁    The setting, marking and assessing of coursework and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students

⦁    Work in collaboration with industry partners, FE and HE partners, and colleagues across the School and University, including; appropriate Deans and Directors, marketing, communications and education support teams
⦁    Organise and contribute to programmes of networking, recruitment, marketing, outreach and public engagement as appropriate. Promote the University’s values and supporting widening access to our programmes and facilities to those who may have historically had little involvement in universities
⦁    Represent the School and University at regional, national and international meetings and conferences
⦁    Contribute to the wider work of the School/Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees
⦁    Evaluate own practice and undertake continuing professional development

 

The Person

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

⦁    Significant subject knowledge/expertise in PEMD manufacturing, industrial automation, digital manufacturing, and software for hardware control
⦁    Demonstrable understanding of current and future challenges in the PEMD, Electrification and Sustainable Manufacturing areas
⦁    Significant experience in lecturing and/or delivering practical skills training
⦁    Demonstrable knowledge of teaching and learning methods and techniques, including online approaches 
⦁    Evidence of substantial experience in the development of a range of high-quality teaching and learning activities and resources 
⦁    Demonstrable experience of contribution to strategic planning activity related to learning and teaching
⦁    Ability to manage the planning and design of teaching materials by programme and modules teams
⦁    Excellent knowledge of a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning
⦁    Experience of marking assignments to agreed criteria, assessing progress, and providing feedback
⦁    Experience of supervising project work
⦁    Experience of dealing with people from a wide range of backgrounds, including engaging with a range of external partners. 
⦁    Experience in managing and mentoring junior staff and students and offering pastoral support
⦁    Highly developed planning and organisational skills 
⦁    Excellent team working and networking skills

Desirable
⦁    Demonstrable understanding of industry higher level skills need; in particular engineering design and manufacturing
⦁    Experience and awareness of Apprenticeship, and Degree Apprenticeship, standards
⦁    Demonstrable experience of contribution to Apprenticeship/Degree Apprenticeship, or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses

Qualifications

⦁    A good honours degree. A PhD in Electrical, Mechanical, Production or Manufacturing Engineering, or significant experience of industry skills development and training; leadership and delivery
