This role is based in our new Soho Place office – opened in 2023 - in the heart of Central London and home to our Research Lab.
The role
We are looking for an experienced Linux Engineer with a background in systems administration, automation and tuning in Linux systems to join our Core Colo Engineering team.
The Core Colo Engineering team sits within the Low Latency Engineering group within G-Research.
The function is responsible for developing and supporting the low-latency and ultra-low latency systems that are deployed as part of a global platform.
We have a large and growing colo estate and the Core Colo Engineering team is tasked with driving forward the vision for making the most of this asset. The team is multi-disciplinary consisting of a mix of Linux, DevOps and software engineers who are responsible for OS provisioning and optimisation, market data feeds, the colo application platform and working to optimise the whole hardware and software stack. We work across team and ownership boundaries to elevate the whole group.

Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Developing the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) code base
- Maintaining high-performance colo Linux machines deployed globally
- Working with development teams to enable the group to make system latency improvements and ensuring changes are recorded in code
- Participating in the team’s support and on-call rota
Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
- In-depth understanding of Linux
- Good knowledge of networking fundamentals
- A proven track record of automation (Ansible or equivalent) and working with software engineers in the same or virtual teams is a must
- A basic knowledge of Python is a must
- Experience of tuning system performance, using kernel by-pass technology or FPGA is a plus
- Financial and ultra-low latency/HFT experience is beneficial but not essential. If you have a non-financial background, we’d very much like to hear from you.
