Your future role
Take on a new challenge and apply your engineering and management expertise in a modern cutting-edge field. You will report to the Engineering Portfolio Manager, with regular progress updates to the project General Manager and will work alongside highly motivated and experienced teammates.
The Class 730 fleet of 3 and 5 cars are brand new trains which entered into service in late 2023. Your role will be to lead a team of four Engineers to provide direct support to the maintenance teams, as well as working on methods to improve any issues identified during service running and lead workstreams to ensure the fleet is as reliable as possible. The 3 car fleet will be maintained from Soho dept, where you and the team will be based, the 5 car fleet will be maintained from Bletchley depot, where some direct support from the team may be required at times.
This is an excellent time to join the project and take over the leadership of the Engineering team. The 3 car fleet is not yet fully in service and will come operational in the West Midlands area during the summer of 2024. The 5 car fleet will commence running on the West Coast Main Line (WCML) during 2024 between Euston and Liverpool.
Soho depot has recently had improvement works to facilitate the maintenance of the new fleet, and Bletchley depot is being reworked and extended to accommodate the 5 car fleet. The team is in place, the operation is running, we now need a new leader to join us and take the team forward as service ramps up to 80 trains in service each day by the end of 2024.
Some of your key responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring the team lead investigations into any potential product safety issues identified in service.
- Ensuring the team lead on driving reliability to the highest achievable levels by identifying failure modes and developing solutions.
- Ensuring the team provide direct support to maintenance teams, driving improvements in manuals and process to ensure work is completed correctly in the most efficient manner.
- Manging the workload of your team, and the delivery of workstreams to the project.

- Ideally educated to Degree or Higher Certificate in engineering/technical discipline
- Chartered status or actively working toward chartered status (advantageous)
- Strong engineering/technical knowledge of traction and rolling stock systems and maintenance policies/practices
- Experience in fleet maintenance or asset management environment
- Experience in delivering rail vehicle engineering change, including risk assessments and approvals
- Knowledge of rail industry legislation and safety case obligations
On a more personal level, you will also need to have:
- Strong organisational, resource management and team development skills
- Strong project management and stakeholder management skills
