The HSBC Global Legal function plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through the provision of robust and comprehensive advice on a legal issues and risks. The team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.
Within Group Legal, the Global Legal Risk Management and Assurance (LRMA) team act as the stewards for Legal Risks, making sure the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported, and mitigated, in line with the Risk Management Framework. The team also co-ordinates, advises on and discharges many of the specific Risk Steward responsibilities on behalf of the wider function.
We are seeking a Managing Associate General Counsel who will cover the full spectrum of Legal Risk Management issues for HSBC UK (HBUK), including leading on internal audit, as well as any globally relevant Global Wealth & Personal Banking (WPB) Legal Risk issues. We are looking for an individual who is comfortable with challenging the status quo, able to advocate for a tailored and proportionate application of the Risk Management Framework whilst at the same time demonstrating a prudent approach to risk mitigation and management. The role holder will have the autonomy to make this role their own within a high profile position in the LRMA team and will act as the primary SME for all Legal Risk Management matters arising in HBUK, the Group’s ring fenced bank, and for issues stemming in the WPB business that have global impacts on Legal Risk Management.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
• Acting as primary advisor on the Legal Risk policies, procedures, and other Group Risk Management Framework matters in your area, supporting the General Counsel for HBUK and the General Counsel for WPB where needed, plus their respective teams. You will report to the Global Head of the LRMA team.
• Coordinating and executing Risk Management processes on behalf of stakeholders in an efficient and streamlined manner.
• Providing leadership, support, and training to lawyers to drive the implementation and institutionalization of the Risk Management Framework and the management of Legal Risk by working closely with the Policy team within LRMA
• Providing subject matter/regional expertise and lessons learnt to the central LRMA team to support the formulation of standards/guidance, policies, procedures, and controls for the management of risk and the implementation of the LRMA framework, working on global projects as required.
• Acting as the main contact between Operational Risk/Non-Financial Risk teams and Group Legal for your area and supporting lawyers on key Operational/Non-Financial Risk projects.
• Building a strong relationship with members of the HBUK and WPB Legal teams and gaining a complete understanding of the Legal Risk environment in these areas, identifying issues and gaps and additional training or other requirements, and proactively take steps to rectify.
