Role description
The Gallery has recently undergone a major transformation, the Inspiring People project. This project has included a comprehensive re-display of our collection, a significant transformation of our building, a new Learning Centre and ambitious national, international and digital programmes to reach new audiences – to be a truly national gallery for everyone. After opening the doors again in June 2023, the Gallery received great critical acclaim and saw record-breaking visitor numbers, and is now focused on embarking on a new, ambitious ten year plan which will ensure that the Collection can be enjoyed for future generations to come. Fundraising will be a critical priority for the Gallery to enable us to deliver these exciting new projects whilst also ensuring that we remain financially robust and sustainable for the future.This role presents an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with significant experience of charitable fundraising who is passionate about portraiture and wishes to support us on the next phase of the Gallery’s journey.

Person specification
Essential criteria
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the vision and values of the National Portrait Gallery and its future development;
- Experience of successful fundraising within the arts, cultural, or charities sector, and utilising professional and personal networks to support fundraising ambitions as an ambassador for the Gallery;
- Significant commercial awareness and an understanding of opportunities for the Gallery to increase its commercial activities;
- Experience of using sound judgement in strategic decision making, with good communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and appreciation of the strategic issues facing museums, and the wider environment within which they operate;
- A commitment to preserving the arts and cultural heritage, and improving education and understanding of British and World history;
- A commitment to improving opportunities for people throughout the UK and access to people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
