About the job

Job summary

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) is a specialist, independent law enforcement agency founded by an Act of Parliament. The Criminal Justice Act 1987 (CJA) gave effect to the recommendations in the Fraud Trials Committee report (est. 1983) and subsequently created the SFO as a non-ministerial Government Department, superintended by the Attorney General. The SFO is an operationally independent prosecuting authority, tackling the most serious and complex fraud, bribery and corruption. We also pursue criminals for their financial benefit from crime, and collaborate with international law enforcement partners, including assisting overseas jurisdictions with their investigations. The SFO brings together a broad range of professional expertise, including lawyers, investigators, accountants, policy professionals and technical specialists to investigate and prosecute the UK’s biggest and most challenging economic crimes. We have an exciting pipeline of major new investigations, including into the pre-paid funeral provider Safe Hands Plans, which collapsed with over 46,000 plan holders. We have also brought fresh charges against ten more individuals across three cases in the past year, including a criminal investigation into the business and accounting practices of individuals associated with Patisserie Holdings PLC.(‘Patisserie Valerie’), which involved the closure of 70 shops and 900 job losses. We also continue to use our unique operational expertise to shape the UK’s legislative framework. We have recently secured an expansion to our investigative powers through the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, and we welcome the ongoing government review of disclosure and fraud, led by Jonathan Fisher KC.

Job description

We are seeking to appoint two new Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) with credible expertise at main board level. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute at a strategic level to the essential and high-profile work undertaken by the SFO within the UK and internationally. Suitable candidates will evidence a credible track record of leadership; applications from first time NEDs are welcome. We would expect you to act as an ambassador for the SFO, engaging with the wider stakeholder community as an advocate for the organisation, to highlight the importance of its work, the quality of the services it delivers, and further raise its profile on a national and international stage.

Person specification

For one of the NED positions, we are looking to appoint an individual with experience of driving digitally enabled transformational change within an organisation, demonstrating insight and awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential to drive efficiencies and innovations in casework and business operations. For the other NED appointment, a background in the professional services, advisory or legal sectors would be beneficial. Senior level experience of wellbeing and strategic people matters would be advantageous. For both appointments, wider experience of other sectors will be considered beneficial to foster diversity of thought and approach, with the ability to provide constructive challenge and support to the board and the executive.
