Job description

About Haringey

Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.

Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.

About the role

Are you an established parks professional looking for your next challenge? If so you may well be interested in the role of Parks and Greenspaces Manager here in Haringey, North London. The role will oversee a large operational inhouse service which encompasses a range of important parks such as the iconic Finsbury Park through to smaller but no less important sheltered housing sites. Haringey has always been at the cutting edge of making a difference and this could be the perfect opportunity for you to shape and help define the Parks and greenspace services in Haringey. Building on the innovative Parks and Greenspaces Strategy adopted last year you can be at the heart of helping us deliver our key vision “That Haringey’s Parks and Greenspaces become fully inclusive shared spaces that deliver our key aims of inclusion and wellbeing, climate change, biodiversity and sustainability and a quality service” You will be supported by an experienced management team and committed workforce and have lots of opportunities to shape the service as part of the wider Parks and Leisure offer in the borough.

About the team

The team is broken down into three key areas Parks, Greenspace and Amenity Services. The Parks team deliver across 58 parks (22 of which are Green Flag Parks) and a range of smaller open spaces. The Greenspace team deliver the grounds maintenance service to the housing estates across the borough. The Amenity Services team provide a range of specialist’s services including Arboriculture, Landscape, Play maintenance, Invasive Species Management, plant production and gang mowing. Overall the team is made up of 93 staff. You will be responsible for an operational expenditure budget of over £5m a year and will be responsible for generating an income of £3.6m per annum.

About you

The Council is looking for an established parks professional who has demonstrable track record of managing a large operational service. The candidate will need to show that they have appropriate knowledge and skill to be able to maximise the resources they have to deliver a safe, well trained, consistent, well managed service within the budget parameters set for the service. You will be a good communicator able to work in partnership with stakeholders, other service areas and elected members. You should have experience of planning and implementing service improvements that delivery tangible outcomes for staff and service users. Parks should be your passion and you should be able to motivate a range of people to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Working for Haringey

At Haringey Council we are committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce so welcome applications from all ethnicities and communities so that we continue to make a difference to our residents and community. Our benefits package includes a leave entitlement of 31 days + bank holidays, potential hybrid working opportunities, health and wellbeing support, a generous local government pension scheme and a range of discount schemes across leisure and culture that provide both financial and money-saving discounts.
