Job description

This role is a 16-hour weekly role, and for female applicants only as an occupational requirement.

Main duties and key responsibilities:
Provide the highest standard of support at all times, meeting the support needs of people as recorded in a person’s support plan.

Working as part of a team, you will contribute towards having a positive impact on the lives of the people we support by helping them to achieve their goals and aspirations and enable them to lead a happy and fulfilling life.

Promote a positive working culture within the team by being supportive and working in partnership with you colleagues to deliver the best care possible to the people we support.

You will help develop and maintain independent living skills to the people we support.
These include:

  • Supporting people in accordance with their needs and wishes as detailed in their person-centred support plans.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to the Safeguarding of Adults and to recognise and report any disclosure, suspicion or evidence of harm, risk of harm, abuse or neglect in line with Coquet Trust’s Safeguarding Adults policy.
  • To ensure that support plans reflect the changing needs and wishes of the people we support by contributing to regular monitoring and review.
  • To encourage and enable the people we support to become active members of both their local and wider communities.
  • To support people to develop or maintain good family relationships and a range of friendships.
  • Promote positive Risk Taking, Active Support and Positive Behaviour Support.
  • To support people in all aspects of their daily living, for example, going shopping, cooking, keeping their home clean and tidy, budgeting and paying bills.
  • To deliver personal care (if required) with dignity and respect.
  • To support people to stay healthy and safe, following guidance from health professionals where health support is required.
  • To accurately complete documentation, including people we support records.
  • To communicate effectively with colleagues, family members and professionals, verbally and in writing.
  • To raise any concerns about practice or the people we support in a timely manner.
  • To ensure required financial checks are completed.
  • To assist people towards volunteering and paid employment.
  • To attend training, including induction training, team meetings and individual supervision meetings as required.
  • To be responsible for protecting and maintaining confidentiality of information at all times in accordance with current GDPR guidelines and Coquet Trust policies.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as requested.

· You will be expected to work alone and as part of a team.
· Actively take part in regular 1:1 supervision meetings and annual appraisals with your line manager.
· Ensure that all of Coquet Trust’s policies and procedures are followed, by working flexibly and adapting to and implementing changes within your role, as and when they are made.

· Coquet Trust adopts a flexible approach to working hours and working locations, including sleep-in duties, unsociable hours and weekend work to meet the operational needs of Coquet Trust to which you would be expected to adhere to.

Key Responsibilities
Meet Mary: Mary is a spirited and engaging individual with a heart full of joy and a love for life. Mary has Down's Syndrome and a learning disability, making her truly special in their own way. Mary brings laughter and warmth to those around them, and with your help, they're eager to embrace new adventures and regain their independence.

In this support package, our overall main aim is to:

  • Increase her social side and getting out and about into the community
  • Exploring new and alternative activities; for example, going out on day trips to the coast or going out for lunches etc.

A typical day as a support worker for her will be to encourage her out of bed, supporting through her morning routine. Most mornings start with her relaxing and watching her iPad in bed, she has breakfast before jointly deciding where or what she would like to do for the day, She appreciates her support workers thinking of places that she will be interested in and giving her options or showing her places on the iPad, then getting ready and heading out for whatever adventure lies ahead. Some recent trips she's enjoyed include; coffee shops and walk into woodlands.

She has a friendly demeanour, and is wanting to get out and about in her community and further afield. She enjoys a laugh and some friendly banter with the people she meets and, this will be key in being able to motivate to attend and be a part of planned activities. This is a fantastic case to work on and we are looking for someone to complete her support team, someone who is as fun and outgoing as she is.

She needs prompts in personal care, daily routine and daily living skills. There is scope in the future to work with her towards goal setting to achieve being more independent in some of these areas, but this will be a slow and patient process that will be routinely assessed and tracked with feedback from yourself and the man we support.

The Role: As a valued member of our support team, you will play a pivotal role in Mary's life, promoting their safety, health, and happiness. Your compassionate support will include:

  • Nutrition and Hydration: Help Mary enjoy nourishing meals and stay hydrated. Your guidance ensures they get the sustenance they need to thrive.
  • Medication Assistance: Offer gentle reminders and support to help Mary manage their medications and administer eye drops, ensuring their well-being.
  • Community Engagement: Be a source of encouragement for Mary to participate in community activities, fostering independence and meaningful interactions.
  • Routine Support: Assist Mary in maintaining their daily routine, including personal hygiene tasks and dressing, fostering their well-being and self-esteem.
  • Social Support: Accompany Mary to medical appointments, provide companionship, and facilitate outings to favourite places like the village, the beach, and the garden centre.
  • Promote Independence: Empower Mary to improve their independent living skills, whether through light domestic tasks, online shopping, or engaging in activities they enjoy.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
We're looking for individuals who embody compassion, patience, and understanding. Someone who can create a safe and nurturing environment while fostering Mary's individuality. Experience in supporting individuals with disabilities is a plus, and your dedication to enriching their life is paramount.

  • Passionate about making a difference and the work of Coquet Trust;
  • Clear written and verbal communication style
  • Basic IT skills and numerical ability;
  • To be willing to undertake required training, sometimes off site and outside normal working hours and to undertake any other duties commensurate with the level of the post;
  • To be willing and able to travel between locations as required;
  • To be available for flexible working patterns including evenings, weekends, sleep-ins and nights as required
  • To represent Coquet Trust in a professional manner and maintain the good reputation of the organization at all times.
