Job description

Who we are:

The National Autistic Society is the UK’s leading charity for autistic people. Since 1962, we’ve been transforming lives, changing attitudes and helping to create a society that works for autistic adults and children.

We transform lives by providing support, guidance and practical advice for the 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK, as well as their three million family members and carers. Autistic people turn to us at key moments or challenging times in their lives, be it getting a diagnosis, going to school or finding work.

We change attitudes by improving public understanding of autism and the difficulties many autistic people face. We also work closely with businesses, local authorities and government to help them provide more autism-friendly spaces, deliver better services and improve laws.

We have come a long way but it is not good enough. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for people on the spectrum. With your help, we can make it happen.

What we can offer you:

  • Pension scheme
  • Excellent induction, training and development programme including training about autism and opportunities to attend our conferences
  • Online staff discount scheme for a range of benefits (cycle to work scheme, season ticket loan)
  • Access to a 24-hour employee assistance programme
  • Access to the Headspace App

We are passionate about supporting autistic people into work, and particularly welcome applications from autistic people. We help autistic people from all backgrounds and strive to represent the same diversity in our staff and volunteers. We particularly encourage applications from people from all minority groups, who are currently under-represented in our workforce. Together, we can create a society that works for autistic people.

Would you like to enrich the lives of autistic children and young people through play?

A breakthrough can seem like the smallest thing, but it can make the world of difference to someone on the autism spectrum, and to their family. By becoming a Project Coordinator at The National Autistic Society you’ll help make Everyday Breakthroughs happen more often.

We are looking for a Project Coordinator to oversee our Short Breaks Social Clubs and Day Outings projects in Surrey and the surrounding areas. Working in close partnership with the Short Breaks manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing support and line management to Lead Project Workers and volunteers within Resource Centre Short Breaks projects.
  • Planning fun, interactive and engaging activities for autistic children and young people, ensuring they are resourced, and effectively communicated to the Lead Project Workers who will deliver them.
  • Being creative and resourceful, finding ways in which we can provide the highest standard of service within the available resources.
  • Implementing an assessment process to track the development of social skills for our children and young people, and making amendments to project activities where necessary to ensure maximum benefit for the people we support.
  • Ensuring the highest standard of service delivery, and shaping services to meet the need of autistic children and young people.
  • Supporting recruitment and induction of Lead Project Workers and volunteers.
  • Ensuring the online database is up to date, and providing monitoring information for each service.

We need you to be resilient, supportive and sensitive towards the needs of autistic people and their families, and to understand the pressures on the team who provide short break and social skills groups across the area.

  • This position is offered on a part time basis of 3 hours per week to be worked as agreed with you at interview
  • You must have 2 years of experience working with autistic children and/or young people.
  • Qualifications at a degree level or equivalent are desirable.
  • Additional training and support will be provided.

If you have any specific questions about the role, get in touch via Email at SEResourcecentres@nas.org.uk or HRHub@nas.org.uk
