Full Time, Fixed Term - one-year contract with possibility of renewal.
We need a motivated and experienced Project Manager to manage the development year of our National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project Sounds of the South West.
The project will be led by Bristol Archives in conjunction with Archives South West (the regional network of local authority archives) and heritage organisations across south-west England. If this development year is successful, it can unlock a further three years of funding for continued audio digitisation and engagement work.
You’ll be leading a small project team to digitise and make accessible rare, at-risk and unique archival audio collections from across the South West.
Under your leadership, the team will:
- Digitise audio collections to archival standard
- Train and mentor ASW staff in
- Caring for audio collections
- How to clear rights so the recordings can be shared online
- Best practice in cataloguing audio archives
You’ll also work with volunteers and learning practitioners to engage local communities with their audio heritage.
You’ll support this team and ensure that all project targets are met in a timely way, identifying and mitigating risks as they arise.
You’ll be responsible for reporting progress to the project steering committee and ensuring the wise investment of the NLHF grant. And you’ll ensure the security and care of audio archives entrusted to the project for digitisation.
You’ll hold a relevant degree or qualification in project management, or have equivalent experience, and have experience of working in an archive, museum or heritage setting. What’s more, you’ll have experience in managing collaborative, externally funded projects with a focus on audience development, public engagement, have strong finance and budget management skills.
You’ll bring your proven leadership and people management skills.
You’ll use these working with paid and unpaid staff and project partners to build a strong, productive and collaborative network. You are an excellent communicator, able to use a variety of methods of effective promotion to the public, such as press, websites and social media. You are also able to effectively communicate and negotiate with a wide range of people and organisations.
You’ll also be great at developing, organising and supporting the team’s training sessions.
You’ll be willing to travel around the project area to collect/return audio collections and to deliver in-person training.

For employees who are currently on a fixed term contract with Bristol City Council, the secondment must not extend beyond the end of the fixed term period to ensure there is a substantive post to return to.
