How do we sum up Barnsley Council? Well, we’re a double award-winning, high-performing council with a growing economy, a thriving town centre and some truly impressive outcomes in our communities. This is why we’ve been awarded Council of the Year for 2023 by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) and The Municipal Journal (MJ).
Our excellent Public Health service has been a key part of our win; we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved not just for the council but for our partners and Barnsley.
We’re impressed. Are you? It’s the perfect time to join our excellent team.
About the Post:
Creativity, ambition and a focus on people. That’s what matters at Barnsley Council. Our award-winning council is on an exciting journey of change. It’s all about putting local people at the heart of everything, listening to and doing good for our communities. We’re now more innovative, more efficient and provide better value for money.
Barnsley MBC are seeking to recruit a Public Health Officer who will work as part of a team to embed and improve health outcomes for children, young people and families living in the Borough, across the Integrated Care System.
You will support the delivery of Public Health functions, ensuring collaborative working, as part of Barnsley’s distributed model of Public Health.
You will be flexible in your approach and able to communicate complex Public Health messages to colleagues across the council.
You will manage your own portfolio of programmes and projects. Your portfolio will change as the priorities of the Children Public team evolve to meet changing local demand. Currently there is a requirement to support the healthy weight, oral health and teenage pregnancy agenda.
Your role will identify opportunities to pilot new interventions and explore creative approaches aimed at supporting behaviour change.
You will use your communication and interpersonal skills to influence strategic partnerships; building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver multi-agency action plans that tackle health inequalities and target the most vulnerable children and young people in Barnsley.
In particular this role includes working closely with key stakeholders including internal and external partners, Family Hub colleagues and our Public Health Nursing service.
To join us, you will need to be passionate about the health and wellbeing of children, and young people and families, have an understanding of the wider factors that can impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people and families, especially those most at risk and be a great team worker with excellent communication skills.
Here at Barnsley, we live and work by four important values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service, and taking pride in what we do. Barnsley Council’s distributed Public Health model supports our vision to be a Public Health Council. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a wider team who can really make a difference to the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the Borough.
