As an Intern Quantity Surveyor you will join our growing team based in Newcastle Upon Tyne as part of our Grid Technologies, Grid Solutions Business, as the demand for energy sector infrastructure is rapidly increasing.
This role is within our financial and commercial team, working alongside our Quantity Surveyors (Commercial Contract Managers) you will be at the heart of the commercial management of our delivery portfolio and will be exposed to the dynamic and challenging landscape of complex design and build high voltage substation projects located across the united kingdom!
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Support our team of Commercial Contracts Managers / Quantity Surveyors with a variety of post contract commercial tasks including interim payment applications and contract administration activities, such as change management, drafting of contractual notifications, collation of claim substantiation information and preparation of quotations.
- On occasion, accompany our Commercial leads at Project meetings with Site, Customer and JV Partner stakeholders at their Office premises or construction sites.
- Attend Project meetings with our Commercial leads and assist with the preparation of agendas, collation of information from team members, creation of slide pack presentations and note/minute taking.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with our wider team members, support departments and other key Project partners (both internal and external).
- Demonstrate a ‘safety first’ approach and live the Zero Harm culture: thinking & working safely
You will have an individual training plan to aid you in developing the specific skills and knowledge required for your role and will be guided by an expert team of Quantity Surveyors which include those holding professional membership status of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
The tasks you will undertake will allow you to gain experience and exposure to the following Quantity Surveying competencies.
- Accounting principles and procedures
- Communication and negotiation skills
- Commercial management (of construction works)
- Construction technology and environmental services (Visit our live Civil / M&E construction sites thought the UK)
- Contract Practice and Administration
- Procurement and Tendering
- Project Finance control and reporting
- Quantification and costing (of construction works) including interim valuations for payment and change management.
- Contract Administration (Bespoke and Standard forms including NEC / FIDIC / MF-1)
- Risk Management
You will also gain awareness of the following though exposure to wider aspects of construction covering matters such as:
- Health and Safety
- Conflict avoidance
- Sustainability
- Programming and planning
- Data management including specific reporting tools and digitalization of processes.
What You Bring
- Studying towards a Quantity Surveying or equivalent degree.
- Prior experience of working in a construction-based finance role would be advantageous but not essential.
- Enjoy working independently, safely and responsibly; take ownership of challenges and ideas.
- Looking to develop your ability to drive and lead change.
- Energized by collaborating with others to find innovative solutions.
- Be comfortable communicating with people at different levels.
- You think logically, are willing to self-learn and research and take a creative approach to problem solving.

In this role, you’ll be part of our finance and commercial department reporting to the Commercial Head of Operations and Lead Commercial Contracts Manger working within dedicated project teams alongside our expert technical and operational staff with the combined goal of successfully delivering the project on time, on budget and to our high standards of quality and safety.
