SalaryApplications are sought for a committed Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Tun Jan (TJ) Young (SGSD, University of St Andrews) and Prof Poul Christoffersen (IMAS, University of Tasmania), as part of the NSF/NERC funded project ‘Thwaites InterdisciplinaryMargin Evolution’, one of eight projects forming the International Thwaites GlacierCollaboration. The focus of this post is to assess the stability of Thwaites Glacier, with an emphasis on the stability of its shear margins.
The primary research duties will be to:
- Characterise and assess the past and present stability of Thwaites Glacier, specifically its Eastern Shear Margin;
- Conduct prognostic experiments to predict the response of the Thwaites Glacier to future climate change; and ·
- Collaborate with and across other ITGC projects to advance process-based ice sheet modelling of the Thwaites Glacier catchment and the larger West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
More broadly, the successful applicant will also be expected to:
- Maintain a strong focus on communicating research findings through publishing in highly ranked journals, as well as presenting their research at relevant conferences and workshops; and
- Take on leadership opportunities that arise, and contribute to the collegiate life of the School, such as contributing to PhD supervision, committee membership, event organisation, and teaching assistance.
The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in glaciology, geophysics, applied maths, physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a relevant discipline. Expertise in numerical modelling, computational fluid dynamics, quantitative data science is highly desirable.
The post is available for 24 months starting 1 April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
