Job description

Post Title: Research Fellow inAI for Energy Systems Optimization
SBU/Department: School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, Dept. of Engineering
FTE: 1 FTE (working 37 hours per week)
Duration of Contract: Fixed term (2 years)
Salary: UH7 £37,099 pa with potential to progress to £44,263 pa on achieving designated skills and experience
Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year
Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield, UK
The Research Fellow will join the Intelligent Control Autonomous Systems (ICAS) lab of the School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science, Dept. of Engineering, University of Hertfordshire. The post will be funded by Innovate UK as part of a collaborative project with UK and international academic and industrial partners.
Main duties and responsibilities
This role will require you to support the Principal Investigator in achieving the project milestones, attend project meetings as required and to undertake the development of software AI tools. You will be required to handle data management and analysis as required and to contribute to the design and organization of the R&D project. The post holder will assist with project administration and with collating and writing publications, the project reports and working papers.
Skills and experience required
Significant experience in Artificial Intelligence for optimization and Machine Learning, knowledge and experience in AI/ML frameworks (TensorFlow, Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, etc) and developing AI/ML projects. Experience and knowledge in AI/ML for Energy Systems and smart grids are desirable. Knowledge in continual and multitask learning and the ability to write up research results for publication in high quality peer-viewed journals.
The post holder must be able to organise their own research activities to deadline and quality standards. Self-motivation with competence to meet deadlines are key skills required.
Applicants must also possess the ability to understand complex problems requiring in-depth knowledge and to be able to collaborate with others. Excellent interpersonal, and organizational skills are also essential. The ability to implement specialized innovative ideas into code, and excellent written and oral communication, and IT skills are required.
Qualifications required
An undergraduate honours degree at a minimum 2:2 (or equivalent) and a PhD (or equivalent qualification) degree in Engineering (Electronics /Electrical) or Computer Science or close to completion of PhD (no more than 3 months prior to viva) in a relevant subject area, or equivalent experience.
