Vulnerable children in the UK need your help

Wherever you work in the Action for Children family, you'll be helping to change the lives of the most vulnerable children in the UK.

Last year, we helped more than 670,000 children and families across the UK. From direct work in communities to national campaigning, we are focused on making sure every child has a safe and happy childhood, and the foundations they need to thrive.

Why Action for Children?

Working here is more than a job. Everyone in the Action for Children family is passionate about protecting and supporting children. It's the sense of purpose that drives us every single day. Because we know that, when we work together, we can make a huge difference to bring lasting improvements to vulnerable children's lives.

A bit about the role

‘Meeting new people. Seeing new places. Doing new things.' That's what our short breaks services are all about! They are an opportunity for disabled children and young people to have fun, gain independence, learn and develop while families get to take a much needed break.

As one of our Residential Worker's, your role will involve providing encouragement and support to young people, aged 5 to 21, in order to help them reach their full potential and achieve their goals. You'll be responsible for assessing their needs, setting goals, and regularly reviewing and evaluating their progress. By creating a fun, safe, and stimulating environment, you'll contribute to their overall development and well-being.

You'll plan and take part in activities based at the service as well as out in the community such as trips to the local shops, parks, cinema, soft play, youth club, beach, swimming and various others. You'll also provide support with day to day routines, life skills, attend to personal care and administer medication following the appropriate training.

How you'll help to create brighter futures

Some key responsibilities of the Residential worker role are;

  • Developing meaningful, nurturing and professional relationships with a focus on the rights and responsibilities of children and young people.
  • Supporting children and young people to achieve positive outcomes for their future.
  • Supporting children and young people with medical needs.
  • Providing a safe environment for them to enjoy time with their friends.
  • Giving families the break they need to continue supporting their amazing children.
  • Assisting the children and young people in all aspects of their care, supporting their health and wellbeing where you'll significantly improve their lives.
  • Ensuring young people have the opportunity to be independent and are able to communicate their needs.
  • Taking the lead role and having key-working responsibilities.

Let's talk about you

  • Ideally, an SVQ Level 3 Children and Young People & HNC in Social Care or equivalent which would meet the registration requirements. (We may consider applicants without required qualifications who are willing to work towards gaining the qualifications within set time scales).
  • Experience of working in a residential care setting and undertaking personal care as required.
  • The ability to record and update case notes, both written and electronically.
  • Safeguarding knowledge.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills.

Good to know

Application Process: There are five sections to complete: Personal Details, CV, Supporting Statement & Information, Equality & Diversity, Submission & Declaration.

Talent Pool: We know talent when we see it. But sometimes we find the right person but not for the right job. We'd love to keep your details for when the right job comes up. Let us know if you'd rather we didn't.

Diversity, equality, and inclusion

At Action for Children, we're dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. We actively encourage applications from Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic, and disabled candidates as they are under-represented within Action for Children. We want to take deliberate and purposeful action to ensure equal opportunity to all groups in society and for Action for Children.

Don't meet every single requirement?

If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't align perfectly with the job description, we'd love you to apply anyway. You might just be the perfect person for this role, or another role within the Action for Children family.

Male staff are under-represented within our Children Service roles. We would like to encourage more male applicants for our Children Service roles.
