Scientific Officer (Capital Works)

Role Description

The Laboratories are responsible for the collection and analysis of water, wastewater, trade effluent and sludge. Both NI Water laboratories hold accreditation to ISO 17025 standard. The post holder will be responsible for carrying out chemical analysis of wastewater and Trade Effluent matrices covering a wide range of determinants including trace metals, general pollution indicators, nutrients, and microbiology for regulatory and operational (Capital Works) samples. The successful candidate will also cover the role of the deputy Technical Manager (DTM) within the wastewater chemistry laboratory, working alongside the wastewater Technical Manager.

Essential Criteria

1. A third level qualification (HNC/HND/Degree) in Chemistry or in a subject where the study of Chemistry is a major component*; and at least 12 months’ practical analytical experience working in an ISO17025 accredited laboratory or a laboratory operating a Quality Management System.

2. Knowledge and understanding of analytical techniques in Chemistry.

3. Knowledge and understanding of ISO 17025 and MCERTS.

4. Experience of Health and Safety requirements relevant to laboratories.

5. Membership of (or working towards membership) of a relevant professional body eg. Royal Society of Chemistry or Institute of Water.

6. Demonstrable experience of proficiency in using Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

* ‘Major component’ is defined as: At least 50% of the course covers core chemistry modules eg. Organic, inorganic, physical or analytical chemistry modules.

Candidates must provide documentary evidence of their qualifications in their application. The onus is on the applicant to clearly illustrate that their qualification meets the ‘major component’ criteria. All applicants should list all of the modules studied during the qualification, and also briefly set out details of each of the relevant core modules detailed above and show that they add up to at least 50% of the total number of modules studied.

This role offers a competitive remuneration package with a salary scale of £25,471 to £31,132 per annum. *

The starting salary will normally be at the first point of the scale.
