Job description

This role has a starting salary of £52,047 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week.

We are excited to be hiring a new Senior Health and Safety Advisor to join our fantastic Health and Safety team. Though this is a full-time position, part-time applications are also welcomed.

Whilst the team is based in Fairmount House, Leatherhead KT22 7AH, we promote a hybrid approach to working. You will be required to travel to council buildings and other locations across the County.

About the Team

The Health and Safety Service are part of People and Change which supports the council in achieving its ambitions for the benefit of Surrey employees and residents by working directly with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

The aim of the Health and Safety Service is to deliver high quality advice, guidance and support, enabling the council and its partners to meet legal and moral obligations through safe working practices and high standards.

About the Role

You will be responsible for providing professional Health and Safety advice and support to the Council's Adults, Wellbeing and Health Partnerships Senior Leadership Team, whilst delivering relevant activities that are in line with the Health, Safety and Wellbeing strategy.

The role reports to the Head of Health and Safety and will work closely with the lead manager for risk and Health and Safety in the Adult Wellbeing and Health Partnerships directorate.

A key goal is to support the Adults, Wellbeing and Health Partnerships Directorate to deliver responsibilities required of all services operated by the council that are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (e.g. social work and therapy support provided in people's own homes, hospital-based services, supported living and short-term break services, and support provided to prisoners). You will play a lead role in the development of the directorate Health and Safety plan, and management reporting. You will also support the systematic review and updating of policies, procedures, guidance and requirements, ensuring that they are understood and are embedded in working practice.

This varied and exciting role will require you to draw on your Health and Safety experience, be customer focused, demonstrate sound project management and have excellent written and verbal communication skills, that enable you to influence positive outcomes.

Experience in the application of Health and Safety legislation in adult social care services and establishments would be an advantage.

Shortlisting Criteria

To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:

  • A National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Diploma or National Vocational Qualification Level 6 in Occupational Safety and Health Practice or equivalent.
  • Graduate member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or other appropriate professional body
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD), working towards or willing to obtain chartered membership of IOSH
  • Experience in carrying out audits and inspections
  • An ability to communicate effectively, influencing both internal and external partners
  • Practical experience of working as a Health and Safety Advisor in a large organisation with a large property portfolio

Candidates will be expected to have a valid driving licence to drive in the UK, access to a vehicle and be willing to travel across a wide geographical area.
