Job description

We have an exciting opportunity on the Cambridge Dictionary team.

Our mission is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

About the role

As Senior Manager, Data Architecture and Analytics, you will work closely with members of a highly collaborative, agile, and ambitious international team to support and enable significant business growth and transformation of the Cambridge Dictionary website as a product itself and as a driver of new business for the emerging Direct to Learner (D2L) sector.

As a leader on the D2L product management team, you will manage the data structure and database systems for the Cambridge dictionary, the Cambridge corpus, and consumer products; the processes whereby content is composed for output to platforms and products; the measurement of the performance of those products; and the lifetime data for users of those products.

This is a specialised, senior role requiring a deep theoretical knowledge of computational linguistics, the technical ability to configure and manage systems in which both linguistic data and user data are housed and manipulated, and the ability to analyse and report on complex data to inform product decisions for the dictionary website and consumer products.

Want to learn more about this role? Please see the attached job description, by clicking apply.

About you

You have a degree in a field relevant to linguistic data analysis, ideally an advanced degree in computational linguistics. You are familiar with dictionaries and corpus linguistics. You have experience with content management systems, preferably in an educational publishing environment - familiarity with English Language Teaching publishing is a plus.

You bring expertise in the structuring of XML data, DTDs, and XSLT transformations for complex data; in database creation and maintenance; SQL; and corpus creation. You are proficient in Excel, web analytics, and Perl scripting; knowledge of Python is desirable. You understand HMTL, CSS, Javascript, and other web technologies and how they interact, including SEO.

You are an experienced manager and strong communicator, with great interpersonal skills with staff and stakeholders alike, whether it's with colleagues, partners, clients, or vendors. On a practical level, you're a pragmatic and resourceful problem-solver. You're comfortable working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, making decisions quickly to adapt the roadmap to changing priorities.

Rewards and benefits

We will support you to be at your best in work and to live well outside of it. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a world-class, flexible rewards package, featuring family-friendly and planet-friendly benefits including:

  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Private medical and Permanent Health Insurance
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Group personal pension scheme
  • Life assurance up to 4 x annual salary
  • Green travel schemes

We are a hybrid working organisation, and we offer a range of flexible working options from day one. We expect most hybrid-working colleagues to spend 40-60% of their time at their dedicated office or location. We will also consider other work arrangements if you wish to work more flexibly or require adjustments due to a disability.

The key to our work is our colleagues, whose shared commitment enables us to have an ever-greater impact. We are a united, vibrant, and respectful global community of people, and we ensure that every individual is recognised, listened to, and cared for. And because our impact is amplified when our people are empowered, we give everyone the opportunity to develop in their own way. Whether you want a career that's linear, or want to follow your own path, we'll support you, and help give you the resources and training you'll need to be bold and take ownership of what you do.

Ready to pursue your potential? Apply now.

We review applications on an ongoing basis, with a closing date for all applications being 7th April 2024; interviews are scheduled to take place the week commencing 8th April 2024.

Please note that successful applicants will be subject to satisfactory background checks including DBS due to working in a regulated industry.

Why join us

Joining us is your opportunity to pursue potential. You'll belong to a collaborative team that's exploring new and better ways to serve students, teachers and researchers across the globe - for the benefit of individuals, society and the world. Sharing our mission will inspire your own growth, development and progress, in an environment which embraces difference, change and aspiration.

Cambridge University Press & Assessment is committed to being a place where anyone can enjoy a successful career, where everyone has a voice, and where we learn continuously to improve together. Ensuring that everyone feels they belong is essential to who we are, and to the contribution we make to society and our planet.

We believe better outcomes come through diversity of thought, background and approach. We welcome applications from people from all backgrounds and communities, actively seeking to employ people from a wide range of different communities.
