Job description

About the Role

To manage setup of production for all journals joining OUP or launching, including collecting product specifications and assessing process requirements from stakeholders, presenting options and negotiating the adoption of best practices, recommending suitable suppliers, documenting agreed specifications and configuring relevant production systems. To ensure the delivery of these actions are co-ordinated with interdependent journal setup activities undertaken by other functions within the business. To manage live production of new journals, ensuring adherence to agreed timelines and quality standards, troubleshooting as needed, and organizing the effective handover of production responsibilities to ‘business as usual’ support teams. As a senior, to independently identify, initiate and manage projects that contribute to the quality, efficiency, standardization and improvement of work undertaken by the department, and, as a subject matter expert, to deliver training to new and existing members of the department as required.

Duties include: 

  • Manage the setup of production processes for journals joining OUP or launching
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to collect and assess requirements for new journals
  • Develop and maintain awareness of subject area trends in order to propose suitable options and deliver excellent production performance for journals across a range of subject disciplines
  • Explore, define and document new capabilities within OUP’s production process to meet client needs
  • Identify and recommend suitable suppliers and internal support models for new journals to the production management team
  • Ensure that all deadlines for transitions/launches are met
  • Monitor supplier performance and troubleshoot as needed during setup and after commencement of live production to ensure consistent adherence to agreed quality standards
  • Train, mentor, coach or advise new and existing staff
  • Initiate, lead, participate in, document or report on projects that develop and standardize production processes

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office. 

About You

Our ideal person will be someone detail-orientated with good time management, and strong understanding of best practices. Project Management experience, working with 3rd party suppliers and having strong client management skills will make you a stand out candidate for this role. 

Skills and experience:

  • Experience in a publishing environment
  • Significant experience in production, including the management of new, sensitive, or significantly complex work
  • Experience managing sensitive client relationships or complex stakeholder engagement
  • Experience of client account management
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate complex information
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Superior negotiation and influencing skills
  • Familiarity with copyediting and typesetting processes
  • Familiarity with XML
  • Experience managing contractors or 3rd-party suppliers
  • Experience in creating or managing technical documentation
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience successfully managing multiple projects to completion
  • Ability to work independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to learn quickly and work flexibly with varied software
  • Good IT skills
  • Experience managing production of a significant number of products in a publishing environment
