Job description

We know that we can't serve our diverse audiences without firstly celebrating the diversity of our people. That's why we work hard to create an inclusive culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We welcome and value difference, so however you look, wherever you come from and whatever your favourite TV programme, if the following describes you, then we would like to hear from you…

• Able to flourish in a complex and collaborative working environment.

• An encourager, eager to share your knowledge and experience to help others.

• Passionate about supporting the National Trust to deliver its aims and objectives.

• Someone who comes to work each day to be the best you can and to learn and develop.

What it's like to work here

Your high-profile work will be integrated into our National Trust Consultancy which provides properties with advice and practical support across the full range of conservation, marketing and supporter development activities. Delivering activities ranging from the design and implementation of major restoration or visitor business projects to practical support for day-to-day operations.  All in the service of helping the Trust to deliver its charitable purpose and its strategic aims.

As this role covers the South West and London & South East regions your contractual location can be either our Bristol Hub or our head office in Swindon. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing

We are looking for an experienced Programme Manager to lead groups of projects delivering capital investment across our southern regions/properties. The project groups span a range of infrastructure areas, including Car Parks, Paths & Trails, new-build Visitor Facilities, and Access & other improvements in support of our Everyone Welcome objective. The role is pan-regional and so there will be a large number of stakeholders to manage and lots of lessons to learn & apply. The role will involve leading a team, building pipelines of capex investment opportunities, defining specific relationships with all stakeholders and overseeing delivery of expenditure through your project managers in a complex environment.

Professionally qualified in project/programme management you will have experience of successfully delivering end to end project/programme management including defining resources, securing project teams and matrix management. You will be able to demonstrate that you can work on your own initiative and be comfortable working in a geographically dispersed matrix environment supporting several projects and programmes at any one time. In addition, you will possess excellent communication, problem solving and influencing skills and be confident liaising with Senior Leaders. Prior experience delivering programmes/projects of capital investment is essential.

Who we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached, this is just to provide a full picture of what is possible in this role, we’d love to hear from you if you have:

• A background of working on relevant programmes and/or transferable skills and knowledge

• Experience of the feasibility, set-up and delivery phases of complex programmes.

• A proven track record of scoping, shaping and planning programmes for strategic benefit.

• Great organisational skills, the ability to move at pace and provide appropriate structure and control, including establishing and navigating programme and organisational governance.

• Excellent communication, facilitation, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills working within a matrix environment; confidence working with senior leaders. You will need excellent verbal and written communication skills to make the case for investment at all levels of the organisation.

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to communicate with clarity. Experience working in a matrix environment, influencing and motivating others without direct line management.

• Knowledge of Change Management processes and practices and experience of using them to drive transformational change.

• a recognised project (ChPP /APM PPQ or PMQ) or programme management (MSP) qualification, show evidence of ongoing CPD in your career to date, and have experience mentoring others in the profession.
