Job description

Summary purpose - what you will be achieving
Strengthening UK biomedical and health research and supporting the next generation of researchers are two of the Academy of Medical Sciences' strategic priorities, and this role will be essential in contributing to these areas of work. The Senior Programme Officer will be responsible for the administration and delivery of one or more of the Academy’s career development programmes, working on a diverse range of career development events, workshops, and conferences. You’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference, working with a wide range of researchers, funders and expert facilitators to run one of our acclaimed programmes that we know have positive impacts on people’s careers. We are looking for somebody who is passionate about biomedical and health research and excited about working with researchers and leading experts in career development.
Requirements
About the role – what you will be doing
1) Administration and leading on the day-to-day delivery of one (or more, depending on the size) of the Academy’s career development programmes. Leading on the organisation and running of multiple in person and virtual events; liaising with venues, tech teams for hybrid set-ups and briefing speakers.
2) Working with professional consultants and partner organisations, who will assist in the development of programmes and facilitate workshops – identifying and researching relevant experts, sharing information with the wider team and contributing to negotiating terms of work.
3) Supporting the (senior) programme manager with forward planning of one (or more, depending on the size) of the Academy’s career development programmes; being the main point of contact (for participants, advisory groups, external and internal enquiries) and working with the (senior) programme manager and supporting more junior team members to ensure successful delivery.
4) Liaising with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority, including the Academy’s Communications team, universities, funding agencies and biomedical and health researchers, in order to promote our programmes and encourage participation.
5) Raising the profile of our programmes to highlight the Academy as a leader in the field, representing the Academy at external events, deputising for the programme manager where needed.
6) Monitoring the success of the Academy’s career development programmes and leading on the production of high-quality routine reports for lead scheme as needed.
7) Supporting the (senior) programme manager in the development and monitoring budgets.
8) Acting as line-manager or project manager for one of the Academy’s interns, on a rotation basis and when the opportunity arises. Supporting Programme Officers with their programme related tasks and personal development when relevant.
9) Supporting the wider programmes and career team activities as required.
10) Undertaking other ad hoc duties that can reasonably be expected of this post.
About you – what you bring to the role.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Degree or similar qualification or equivalent work experience in a relevant area.
Excellent team working skills.
Experience organising and running events and training workshops (experience of running both in person and online events is desirable).
Some experience working with external organisations, training facilitators and/or senior academics is desirable, including working in partnership to deliver a piece of work.
Strong organisational skills with keen attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel with support from the (senior) programme manager.
Some experience working with databases is desirable (we are currently using Salesforce and FlexiGrant).
Some experience managing a budget is desirable.
Desire to support more junior colleagues with their development.
Desire to support the careers of the next generation of researchers.
Able to travel to events around the UK.
Respects the diverse values, views and experiences of others.
Good IT, literacy and numeracy skills.
