Job description

Salary: £55,542
Closing date: 25 March 2024
Contract type: Permanent

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
The Infectious Disease Strategic Priority Area is looking for a Senior Research Manager with a background in entomology to develop and shape projects which consider how environmental change is leading to changes in vector (notably mosquito) behaviour, distribution (including invasive species) and ability to transmit disease. We are particularly interested in seeing applications from individuals with knowledge of the Aedes mosquito.
Infectious Diseases, most notably vector-borne diseases such as dengue are escalating as a result of environmental change. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this escalation is crucial to enable us to develop new interventions and optimally use existing ones.
We are looking for a Senior Research Manager to join our team. You will be joining a team focused on reducing the burden of vector-borne diseases in low-and-middle income countries by filling key knowledge gaps and developing new interventions.
In this role you will:
  • Contribute to the leadership, development and delivery of the Infectious Disease Strategic Priority Area ensuring strategic objectives are met.
  • Support the Infectious Disease team to convene, fund and share learning leading on the implementation and assessment of funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports and liaising with internal and external groups and individuals as required.
  • Lead on scoping areas of interest, shaping and advancing internal research and development projects and be responsible for a number of large projects that will cover one or more of the activities described above.
  • Use deep understanding of the stakeholders within the entomology area to identify establish and maintain key relationships, understanding their needs and working in partnership.
  • To ensure Wellcome has a good understanding of the nature of our funding portfolio (covering research progress, research culture (locally and at host) and D&I ), and an active relationship with applicants and staff on grants so that all funded researchers feel a greater sense of partnership with Wellcome.
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
To be successful in this role you will have:
  • An advanced degree in the life sciences or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • Able to demonstrate a breadth of research expertise in the field of entomology in particular the effect of environmental change on vectors through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting.
  • Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities
  • Significant experience in working in the entomology field
  • Ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different background and different seniority levels.
  • Excellent organisational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities
To apply please upload your current CV and complete our short application.
