Job description

About us

We’re National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), the owner and operator behind the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England and South Wales. Serving communities of more than 8 million people, our expert teams deliver heat, light and power for homes and businesses.

Our IT team are vital to our business in many ways. Not only do they assist their colleagues across the business by supporting and enabling everything from desktop computers and networking to managing infrastructure, they also take care of cyber security and develop applications. Right now, we’re looking for a Software Developer to join us.

We are an equal opportunities employer. Our desire is to bring in more employees from diverse backgrounds to build further on our inclusive culture. We value and celebrate individual difference and we believe that an inclusive culture will help the business grow as a positive, strong and innovative company.

Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Software Developer to join us and make a real difference. An opportunity has risen working in the IT applications team that support NGEDs contact centre and are key to the journey of our 7.8 million customer’s experience when being without electricity.  You will be receiving the close mentorship, additional training and guidance required to realise your goals. Opportunities include database, GUI and cross-platform application development.

If you have an IT related degree or equivalent and have additional practical experience in an IT software development role, then we look forward to hearing from you.

So what are you waiting for, apply today!

As part of our hybrid working approach and in line with our policy, this role allows you to apply for a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

If you are offered a position, you will be required to undertake and successfully complete a BS7858 security screening check.

As an equal opportunities employer who is committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, we celebrate individual difference and are actively bringing in more employees from diverse backgrounds to build on our inclusive culture. We anonymise all jobs in our recruitment system, so we can eliminate unconscious bias and be a workplace that reflects the community we serve.  Hiring managers only have access to necessary information after shortlisting has taken place and before interview so they can prepare.

Key Accountabilities

You will work on tasks spanning all aspects of the software development lifecycle, both collaboratively and individually. You will join us in our relentless refining of the craft of software development: learning new technology stacks, adopting and adapting processes and best practices.

In an always learning environment you will collaborate with other teams and problem solve by coming up with creative solutions to requirements before transforming into functional elements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing, evolving and maintaining software and services
  • Translating requirements into tasks and code
  • Testing and peer review of work produced by other team members
  • Participate in the design of new systems and functionality
  • Supporting the wider technical teams in the business
  • Being adaptable to new technologies and challenges

Experience & Technical Knowhow

You will have an IT related degree or equivalent and have additional practical experience in an IT software development role.

A background in database or front-end development with appreciation of Cyber Security and understanding of secure development principles and practices.  You will have an understanding of relational databases and SQL and software development life cycles with source control and CI/CD. Experience with Oracle applications, Java and  API's will also help you succeed in this role.

Strong analytical and organisational skills as well as good interpersonal skills, self-confidence and personal drive are essential to be successful in this role along with a willingness , once suitably qualified, to participate in an out of hour’s standby working arrangement within the team.

Candidates may not necessarily possess all the skills required to carry out the role at present but should have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with training.

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £39,000 – £45,000 – dependent on capability

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
