We are looking for a Support Worker to join our Service based in Basingstoke on either a part time or full time (37.5 hours a week) basis. Shifts will be spread across mornings, afternoons, evenings and sleep ins, weekends and bank holidays.
This is a hugely rewarding role! Together, you will be building new friendships, activities and opportunities within the local community, and beyond. You will be seeking out their hobbies, interests and passions and creating some fantastic memories along the way.
In this service you will be supporting young adults who have profound and multiple learning disabilities.
We are looking for people with a ‘can-do’ attitude who are strongly motivated, outgoing, caring and have a calm demeanour when needed. As well as our award winning Induction programme, you will receive additional bespoke training for this service, covering a number of other skills, such as: Peg feeding, Epilepsy, Dysphagia, in addition to specialist training for specific interventions. Mencap are hugely committed to the ongoing personal and professional development of their staff, and will support you every step of the way.
Supporting someone with their daily life is not a 9-5 job. This service will be requiring staff to cover shifts 7am to 10pm. You will need to be able to work flexibly across a range of different shift patterns, including various day shifts, evenings and weekend duties.
We realise that your quality time is important too, so your rota will be prepared well in advance – Got a request, something special going on? Your manager will certainly try to help you meet it. Please note that the role will involve manual handling and supporting people will all aspects of their personal care.
You don't need previous experience! As long as you have a positive attitude and want to improve the lives of those with a learning disability, we will support you with progression opportunities throughout your career with us.
What does a Support Worker do?
As a Support Worker you will be expected to provide an outstanding level of support that will help to ensure the people we support live a more comfortable, dignified, liberated and happy life. You will have excellent communication skills and be a naturally caring and patient personality. Typical responsibilities may include:
- Supporting people to live independently – budget management, paying bills, housework, organising appointments and cooking delicious healthy meals.
- Excellent communication skills and Relationship building – supporting the people we support to understand the world around them and promoting positive relationships.
- Community & Social Inclusion - supporting individuals to access and participate in their local community and social events to promote life skills and individuality.
- Personal care - helping people to get ready for the day. This may include prompting the people we support to take their medication and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom. Not all Support Worker roles include high levels of personal care.
