About The Role

2 New Roles – Permanent – Hybrid UK Wide Team

The UK has set out its ambition to be net zero by 2050 and the energy industry is responding – together we are building a cleaner, greener Britain.

These roles are important positions within the Strategic Infrastructure (SI) business unit, enabling us to build the projects that will make the energy transition happen. You will help develop key consenting documents, within the Strategic Options Report (SOR), ensuring its quality and compliance.
Your input will help build strong evidence for our DCO process and contribute toward moving our major net zero projects toward build and delivery.
These roles will report into The Head of Engineering Services and as Technical Manager you’ll look to build your team to around 4 over the next 12 months.
As Technical Lead, you’ll provide expert guidance into the Technical Manager and provide mentoring when necessary.

These roles are hybrid with offices available in Warwick, Leeds, Chesterfield, Birmingham and London. We continue to offer hybrid working from office and home.

About You

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who possesses strong risk management skills, providing strategic guidance to project teams to ensure proactive management of technical challenges.

You’ll be passionate about shaping and building a Team as Technical Manager and being solutions orientated and highly pragmatic as Manager or Technical Lead.
You’ll be grounded by the reality of what it takes to deliver and committed to doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
A proven track record in developing and coordinating technical documents for public, regulatory, and government readership is needed here.
You’ll have excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and quality in technical report documentation, with the ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
You’ll are able to collaborate with other departments, project directors, and stakeholders to align with overall business objectives for production of this publicly accessible report.
A background in engineering may be useful. You should understand areas such as energy infrastructure, technical solutions and the consents process.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid, we’re committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What You'll Do

You’ll be coordinating the development of SORs with each project team across the SI portfolio of circa 17 projects, providing technical authorship
You’ll work to translate complex engineering concepts and technical information of project optioneering (well supported by evidence and aligned with project objectives) into clear and understandable documentation for diverse stakeholders, ensuring adherence to best practices in technical writing. As such a good understand from an engineering perspective would be necessary.

As Technical Manager your activity will lean toward contributing to creation of SOR templates and revising it according to evolving legal, regulatory and policy context. You’ll ensure its suitability for Development Consenting Order (DCO) applications.
You’ll continually contribute to the creation and revision of input templates to make it easier for project teams to input data required to write the SOR and ensuring consistency of approach and development across the SOR portfolio.
As a team you’ll have a diverse number of contact points including the Senior Project Managers of individual ASTI projects, Environment, Legal, Consenting and wider Electricity Transmission colleagues.
