Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development
The Business Development, Impact and Policy (BDIP) team is responsible for facilitating industry engagement to generate income that contributes to the University's third mission, whilst capturing all research Impact and policy development.
The post-holder will be based within BDIP which provides a central hub for Business Development, impact support and the management of funding for impact knowledge exchange and knowledge transfer. This post-holder will develop and implement a strategy to support the growth of consultancy and commercial tender capture activity and income from across the University as well carry out marketing activities. The role will involve consultation and collaborative working across a wide range of internal and external services.
There is an established process for the management of consultancy and tenders, which is currently delivered by colleagues within the central Research Operations team and by administrative staff in several academic departments. During the initial phases of this role, you will be expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing policies and processes and to examine and understand best practice across the higher education sector. Working in consultation with the Head of BDIP and Head of Research Operations, you will take responsibility for the development and implementation of a new model for efficiently seeking, managing and growing consultancy and tender activity across Durham University and marketing activities relating to this function. The post-holder will be an enthusiastic and determined individual with experience of operating in a business-focused professional environment.
Key to this role is the ability to spot consultancy and tenders including: identifying and disseminating opportunities, delivering training and information events, lay reviewing applications, project managing the submission process of the bid including responsibility for budget development and processing awards including contract negotiation and amendment throughout the lifetime of the award. It is essential that the Tenders and Consultancy Manager is highly organised, pays close attention to detail, and has a pro-active approach to problem-solving. The capability to prioritise and manage a busy and varied workload is crucial, as is the need to delegate and oversee the work of a dedicated support officer when required. The ability to work across a number of concurrent projects at different stages of development is essential. A confident communicator, you will form close working relationships with the BDIP, RIS-Ops, Faculty Officials, Heads of Department, Directors of Research, Department Managers and other members of Professional Support Staff.
