Job description

Are you looking to make the transition to project management from a project co-ordination or similar role? The University of Cambridge is looking to fill a new role of Trainee Project Manager as part of its Finance Transformation Programme (FTP). The programme is shaping and enhancing Finance's processes and tools of the future. It will implement new systems, introduce new tools, and redefine ways of working that will enable staff to deliver excellent financial services in support of our academic mission.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who would like to develop their project management experience and skills within a supportive and experienced team, working on high profile initiatives, particularly the provision of transparent financial information across the University.

The Role

Supported by and reporting to the Senior Project Manager, you will be immersed in and learn from a high profile and wide impact programme that has been identified as one of the University of Cambridge's top priorities for the next few years. You will be coached in taking responsibility for coordination, monitoring and management across several projects to include the following tasks:

  • Creation and maintenance of required documentation, including project plans, to ensure that the project delivers on time
  • Maintenance of accurate budgetary information to ensure that the project stays within its financial constraints
  • Creation of progress reports for programme directors and governance bodies
  • Planning and execution of stakeholder engagement activities
  • Supporting the provision and presentation of material at project board meetings
  • Liaison with third party providers
  • Responsibility for day to day administrative activities and processes to ensure efficient and effective operation of projects.

There will be an option to explore the possibility of gaining a professional project management qualification.

Your Skills

We are looking for someone who has had a project or operational co-ordination role and has:

  • Played an integral part in ensuring the project or operational area is well managed and monitored against plans
  • Helped to ensure that budgets are maintained and monitored
  • Communicated effectively and clearly with stakeholders
  • Shown excellent attention to detail and manages their time effectively

Benefits

The University offers an excellent benefit package including:

  • 41 days annual leave, inclusive of Bank Holidays
  • Defined benefits pension schemes
  • Flexible working options
  • Family-friendly initiatives
  • Career development opportunities
  • Support for health & mental wellbeing
  • Discounts on shopping
  • Rental deposit scheme
  • Public transport season ticket loans
  • Tax-efficient bicycle and charity-giving schemes

Location

The University is supportive of hybrid working, where some work is undertaken on University premises and some in a remote working environment. The aim of our approach is to enable as many staff as possible to work in a hybrid way if they wish and where their role allows. This arrangement is subject to change and will not form a part of the contractual terms of the role.

Funding for this post is available for 4 years.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure and a security check.

Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.

We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.
