Job title: Academy Physiotherapist
Reports to: Head of Academy Medicine
Location: Florence Park Training Ground, Tiptree, Colchester
Hours per week: This is a full-time role requiring flexibility to work regular evenings and weekends, plus regular travel to away matches. Working days will involve evenings, with matchday cover on Saturdays and Sundays

Job purpose:
- To contribute to the success and achievement of Colchester United FC, striving for excellence and optimal service provision within the academy medical department.
- This role will primarily be responsible for the Youth Development Phase (U15-U16s) with the expectation to cover and support, lead and aid delivery of the medical provision across U9-U14s age groups as required.
- To strive to create a medical department that is viewed as a Best in Category in the management of neuromusculoskeletal injuries.
Roles and responsibilities:
- To assist the provision of physiotherapy services across the academy.
- To facilitate the use of part time physiotherapists and/or sports therapists in the provision of medical care to all players in the academy.
- To primarily lead the day-to-day provision of medical care to academy players in the under 15’sunder 16’s age groups whilst supporting the Physiotherapy provision of the under 9s to under 14s age groups.
- To manage the rehabilitation of injuries to players in the U15-16s whilst providing regular injury updates and recommendations to coaches and parents.
- To assist the Lead YDP Physiotherapist in the assessment, treatment and match day cover for other academy squads as required.
- To prioritise and manage your injury list with guidance from senior staff members. To follow the departments processes and philosophy.
- To ensure the management of injuries effectively meets its commitments to the players, coaches and senior management through clinical audit and accurate documentation, as well as communicating injury updates with parents/guardians in a timely manner.
- To liaise effectively with the academy coaching staff on a daily basis in order to keep them informed of players’ availability for academy matches and training.
- To provide musculoskeletal screening and profiling for all academy players and integrate this with the club medical records.
- To provide injury prevention strategies to all academy players, delivered as both individual and group based athletic development sessions.
- To ensure the delivery of preventative rehabilitation effectively meets its commitments to players, coaches and academy management through clinical audit and accurate documentation.
- To help plan and deliver athletic development for individuals and group sessions in the U15-16s with the aid of S&C coaches.
- To assist and coordinate the pre-signing medical assessments of U16s players as well as assist with player medicals in the Professional development phase when required.
- To accompany and help organise medical consultations for players at short notice. Ensuring best practice is followed at all times and ensuring the player receives optimal care and advice at all times.
- To provide physiotherapy match day cover at fixtures home and away providing a high standard of pitchside care in line with ATMMIF/ITMMiF teaching.
- To organise and implement the medical provision and equipment for away matches, tours and camps.
- To ensure all medical equipment and procedures are regularly reviewed and maintained at the training ground and at all development training venues under the guidance of the Head of Academy Medicine and Lead Academy Physiotherapist and Part Time Therapists.
- To work alongside the sport science team in order to deliver first class recovery and injury prevention strategies to all players both after games and on recovery days.
- To ensure all players are educated on the importance of recovery.
- To contribute to discussions around training planning and periodization to reduce injury risk.
- To take an active role in all medical and MDT meetings.
- To assist in the maintenance of emergency action plans and department procedure documents under the guidance of the Head of Academy Medicine, Head of Medicine and the Club Doctor.
- To assist in the establishment of a database of commonly occurring injuries as highlighted by recent audits in comparison to previous seasons, producing a best practice protocol for these injuries according to the latest evidence.
- To assist in the production an injury audit on a yearly basis for the Academy and feedback to provide accountability for the department and actively seek to follow best practice.
- To help organize appointments/consultations as well as appropriate travel arrangements for Academy players as required.
- To contribute to in-service training sessions,trauma training and part-time staff training.
- To participate and contribute towards the department CPD programme to ensure the on-going development of knowledge and skills.
- To take responsibility for their continued professional development to ensure that you attend regular courses, conferences and keep an up to date file of their CPD achievements.
- To maintain a CPD file which is in line with the CSP guidelines and to ensure that you are developing your practice on a regular basis.
- To produce rehab programmes for injured player’s and ensure all medical notes are up to date within 24-48 hours of treatment.
- To ensure medical notes are completed in line with CSP Core Standards.
- To produce regular rehabilitation reviews and to contribute to the significant event analysis as required.
- To produce tri-annual audits of injury’s to report back to Head of Academy Medicine and Lead Academy Physiotherapist.
