Role overview

As a Data Engineer, you’ll be responsible for working to build out and improve the company's data ingestion, transformation, transactional and data warehousing needs directly supporting the data science and analyst teams. This role is essential to building and scaling new and existing data streams to support WGSN’s growing data products and services. This position will require a highly motivated, quick learner, who is looking to constantly be challenged.
Key accountabilities
Data Architecture:
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable and efficient data architectures, including data warehouses and data lakes.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and design appropriate solutions.

ETL Development:
  • Develop and implement robust Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ensure the seamless flow of data from source systems to data repositories.
  • Optimise and streamline data pipelines for maximum performance and reliability.

Database Management:
  • Manage and administer databases, ensuring data integrity, security, and availability.
  • Perform database tuning and optimization for improved query performance.

Data Quality and Governance:
  • Implement data quality checks and ensure adherence to data governance policies.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to establish and maintain data quality standards.

Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and software engineers, to understand data needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner.

Continuous Learning:
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in Data Engineering.
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Data Engineering processes.

Skills, experience & qualifications required
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related quant field (or equivalent experience).

Experience:
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with relational and NoSQL databases.

Technical Skills:
  • Expertise in data modelling, ETL development, and data warehousing concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, or similar data processing frameworks.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and related services (AWS preferred).
  • Knowledge or familiarity with Databricks or similar distributed compute systems.
  • Ability to design and stand up APIs and services

Programming Skills:
  • Proficient in a programming language such as Python, Java, or Scala.

Communication Skills:
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

Problem-Solving:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
