Air Quality Monitoring (Project Officer)

1 x Permanent

1 x Fixed Term Contract for 4 years due to funding

Grade 5 - £40,221 - £48,474 Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review

Working 36.5 hours per week

A job opportunity within Birmingham City Council's Environmental Protection team (Environmental Health) working in conjunction with colleagues from other services, especially Transportation and the dedicated Clean Air Zone team.

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated individual with a background in environmental protection and Air Quality to join our Environmental Protection Team whilst working alongside our dedicated Clean Air Zone team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the monitoring of pollutants as part of our duties under the Clean Air Zone (CAZ), progressing clean air related projects in line with the Council’s Clean Air Strategy (CAS) and providing advice in line with Council policy and government requirements.

Duties will cover the monitoring of air pollutants under the CAZ incorporating the establishment of monitoring stations, the day-to-day management of monitoring stations, the collation and interpretation of the output from the stations and the presentation of those findings into reports to management and Government in line with relevant guidance.

Duties will also include the provision of support and assistance to the Air Quality Policy Manager within the CAZ Team on Air Quality related projects and programs arising from the Council’s CAS, including leading on various Air Quality related campaigns, providing technical advice and the provision of relevant reports. The successful candidate may also be required to undertake enforcement work in relation to Air Quality.

There will also be a requirement to work in partnership with Transport and Connectivity / Highways and Infrastructure services to assist in the assessment of the Air Quality implications of proposed traffic related schemes.

Applicants will have a degree / diploma in a relevant science subject. Additional technical qualifications are an advantage.

Driving license and own vehicle essential.

The service has moved to a more agile mode of working and as such the role will involve mobile working from an administrative base situated on the city centre ring road.
