Job description

  • You will be given keys and open the gallery, serve customers, and curate the collection of British art and craft, jewellery, ceramics, glass, fabrics, furniture, paintings, prints, sculpture and silver, some of which are on the website - for 2 to 5 days a week - www.primaveragallery.co.uk - and close.
  • We are open Mondays to Saturdays from 10 am to 5.30 pm, and Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primavera_Gallery.
  • You will be numerate, interested in and adept at social media - increasing our followers, and keeping our website up-to-date, fun and relevant - with excellent spoken and written English.
  • You have a stress free personality, and enjoy working in an outdoor/open gallery environment, so in the winter you will not mind dressing warmly.
  • You are trustworthy and have the stamina to work on your feet throughout the day across three floors. You are confident hanging paintings, and willing to unpack, display and package delicate artwork and jewellery.
  • You have experience in collaborating with other members of a team perhaps at school, university or in a previous role, and can happily interact and prioritise jobs with colleagues, artists and customers.
  • You have knowledge of, or wish to quickly learn about ceramic making, and glass blowing, casting, painting techniques and jewellery making - precious and semi-precious stones, metal types (gold, platinum, silver, etc.), their values, and jewellery design. With regards to jewellery, you already appreciate or want to understand the time it takes to find interesting natural stones, then design and make things by hand, and understand possible shortcuts and economies like casting, plating and outsourcing which might reduce the cost, and therefore the selling price. Our selling prices reflect true value, and those that artists sell their work for directly. Within any sale there is what we pay to the artist, VAT and costs like your own salary, so the calculation is sensitive.
  • You have the motivation and desire to find and support new British artists and makers who want our promotion and help - involving sometimes driving, delivering and picking up work - often out of normal working hours. If you do not have a driving licence, you plan to quickly learn to drive and acquire one.
  • At the heart of what we do, is a strong work ethic - over seven days a week - caring for and personally enjoying and respecting the depth of the artwork and jewellery we display created by the wonderful artists we represent - and seeking new ones to support, who would contrast and fit with those already at the gallery, taking great care in showing we value them and the customers who visit us - seeking always to find common ground.
  • Questions
  • Are you a jeweller, artist or maker like me, who wants to display and sell artwork by other British jewellers and artists?
  • Would it excite you to organise, display, photo, present on social media and our website, and sell unique and handmade British items?
  • Would you like to exhibit your own work, and/or make and sell it at Primavera, however still want to support other British artists?
  • Do you live in or very close to Cambridge, and are not planning to travel or do a MA for at least a year?
  • Are you flexible and immediately available - for 2 to 5 days within any days of the week?
