Main Duties
This an exciting opportunity for a reliable and organised Artist Assistant with a broad range of practical and administrative skills to work closely with an established contemporary artist. Working across various media including sculpture, drawing, painting, film, and installation, the successful candidate will work on a wide variety of projects with established galleries and museums and oversee the day-to-day operations of the studio.
The work varies daily so the right candidate will take pride in whatever task is required and needs to have a flexible working approach. They must be proactive and highly organised with the ability to manage multiple and complex priorities. Main responsibilities include practical support in the development and production of work as well as office administration.
The right candidate will be a reliable, punctual and down-to-earth individual with great manual skills and a keen eye for detail. They should enjoy working in a hands-on environment and will be able to work independently to deadlines. A strong interest in and knowledge of contemporary art is beneficial.
Skills and Experience Required
Required Skills:
- Have a keen eye and attention to detail.
- Great range of manual skills with an understanding of a variety of sculpting techniques.
- Knowledge and confidence in using a variety of hand tools.
- Team player, comfortable working in a highly creative environment.
- Mac literate.
- Experience preparing and interpreting scale models and scale drawings.
- Excellent communication, both verbal and written.
- Excellent administrative, financial numeracy and organisation skills.
- Fluent use of Google Sheets/docs
- Experience of liaising with key stakeholders such as galleries, press, museums and fabricators
- Ability to prioritise both their own work and have sufficient confidence to prioritise the work of others.
Advantageous:
- Great research skills, accurate proof reading.
- Experience of archiving.
- Some familiarity with the use of 3d Printers, CAD is useful but not essential.
- Knowledge and understanding of contemporary art.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting with all aspects of fabricating work.
- Interpreting and checking technical drawings, ordering and ensuring materials delivered are suitable for production.
- Using hand tools.
- Ensuring all materials are in stock and timely ordered.
- Undertake moving and lifting duties.
- Liaising with fabricators.
- Preparing scale models and scale drawings.
- Supporting preparations for the installation and takedown of exhibitions.
- General administrative support.
- Monitoring and responding to enquiries.
- Managing database and records.
- Maintaining working documents and spreadsheets ensuring that all new works are properly documented, coded and filed in a timely manner.
- Manage and update contacts database.
- Draft correspondences, answer or redirect enquiries, ensure all are followed up.
- Invoicing and preparing documents for the accountant to submit VAT quarters
- Project programming.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety Regulations, Buildings Management Regulations.
The studio is located off the North Circular (A406), between Tottenham and Walthamstow. Closest train station: Meridian Water. Short cycle up the canal from Tottenham Hale Station too.
Interviews will be held the week starting 27th May. The successful candidate would ideally start by 10th June.
